Epson 1280 / iphoto 08 question

Recommended Posts

I recently switched from an older PC to an imac. My Epson 1280 works with the imac, but not as

well as with the PC. When I use the print option on the iphoto, I get a different screen, which does

not have the choice of high res or high speed for printing. (I always use high res.)

I reloaded the Epson CD, which had no effect. Except for the printing issue, the iphoto seems an

adequate program for my needs. I especially like being able to lighten or darken either the

shadows or the highlights.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I've seen a similar problem in Windows, and maybe there's a parallel in iMac. Windows XP has a simplified Epson driver embedded which allows the OS to recognize some Epson printers as "plug and play" devices, without the need for installing a separate driver. The file name for the embedded driver would be something like, "Epson Stylus Photo 1280 ESC/P 2". Check the driver you're using for a similar file name. Usually, the problem can be solved by downloading the 1280 driver from the Epson site, installing it properly and then deleting the simple simon version. The only problem I've ever had with this is with printers on a network, where the status monitor doesn't work.

Thanks for your reply,William. I think you are on the right path. I don't seem to be

able to pull up the same Epson printing pages I could with Windows. I have

downloaded the Epson driver several times and run the CD as well. I am thinking

either Apple has designed iphoto to take over or they have programmed a simple

plug and play set up. Either way, I have not been impressed with either Apple or

Epson. It is annoying. The rest of iphoto seems like a decent program.

You and I must be the only 1280 users on this forum. I do appreciate your thoughts.

Ken, if you haven't already done so, you might check the Epson site. The support page has some pretty specific instructions for downloading/installing the driver in a Mac.

I think there are a few of us 1280 users that lurk here. It's my backup printer for my 2200, which is also kind of long in the tooth. Not only that, but I also still have my original 870, which my wife and I share as an office printer. It's kind of like an Epson museum around here.

Good luck......

William, I had checked the Epson site. However, rechecking it, I found more info.

Thanks for the tip. It would appear I am using the correct driver. I believe the

culprit may be something in the iphoto program commandeering the printing screen.

In hindsight, I regret ever having the ilife08 program loaded . i don't use any of the

other parts.

I suppose you are right about the 1280 being "long in the tooth". In context with my

film equipment: 1958 Leica M3; 1973 Nikon F....even the "new" Wisner dates from

1990; I don't think of my 1280 as being old.

I am surprised Epson doesn't mention something about iphoto. Perhaps they will

when they eventually answer (hopefully) my email.

Again,thanks for your help.

Ken, Try Epson support Mac OS 10.5 Leopard first( to make sure you are not running

on the GutenPrint generic driver) then try Apple. Again, neither may support all options

of the 1280 era printers.I access all 1280 options with iPhoto w/ MacOS10.4

Thanks to all for the replies. I finally "cracked the case". After I hit the print button, a

a screen came up with the "Epson 1280" listed. There was an arrow in a box next to

that. Clicking the arrow brought up another screen, which showed "iphoto". (It would

also have shown other programs if I had any loaded.) Clicking on the iphoto brought up

the choices of printing I needed. The computer already had the correct driver loaded. i

hope this information might help someone with the same question in the future.
