www.whitemountainphoto.com
Schneider-Kreunznach 120mm, f5.6 HM - I recently purchased this lens on Ebay, and received it without any lens caps or filters. I was hoping to purchase on line asap some lens covers and a couple of filters, but could not be sure of the size. If you actually own one, could you confirm for me the filter size, and the size of the rear lens for a slip on cap? I communicated with a rep at Schneider who said the lens filter size is 67mm, but it's definately not. I already own a few 67mm filters for my 645 and they are obviously too big for this lens. My guess is that it's about a 62mm, but I don't own calipers, live in a small town with no large chain to go to to try on filters, and was hoping to order one asap before certain spring conditions dissapear in my area. I told the rep at Schneider, and he really couldn't tell me much other than it doesn't match his "fact sheet". Thanks for any help given. Ed_Ingold
You should be able to buy a metric ruler at any hardware store for between $3 and $20. A plastic, dial caliper can cost as little as $30. These are short-run lenses, which are subject to periodic changes. You have already found a discrepency, so why take a chance?

colin carron
Dana, I do not own this lens but you might have better luck finding people who do own it if you re-posted in the Large Format Forum. However looking at Schneider's own website the filter size is given as 67mm. http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/large_format_lenses/super-symmar-hm/super_symmar_hm.pdf The table is a bit confusing but under the Technical Data section is a column marked 'Accessory thread' and 'Thread 1'. For the 120/5.6 the thread is given as 67mm. The front cap diameter (d1) is given as 70mm and the back cap diameter (d2) as 54mm.
sknowles
The rep. is correct. My Super Symmar HM 120mm lens takes a 67mm filter. You might ask on the large format forum. I hate to ask the obvious question, but could it be a Makro HM lens? If not, I'm not familar with the history of this lens to know if there an older version with a smaller filter size, Kerry Thalman's Web page lists the lens with a 67mm filter. If worse comes to worse you can measure the inside diamater near the threads and convert to mm, since filter come in step sizes, it will be a common size, either 58mm or 62mm, but nothing else. colin carron
...or is there a step-down ring fitted?
arne_croell
I own this lens (one of the sharpest LF lenses ever built in my opinion), and the Schneider rep. is correct. My lens takes 67mm filters.
michael_briggs2
If you measure the threads, realize that thread sizes are defined by the outside diameter of the male threads. On the lens, it will be easier to measure the inside diameter of the female filter threads, which will be smaller, so you need to round this value up a bit. Or eyeballing with a ruler, you can try to measure to the outside of the female threads.
