eva76
Where do I find cheap secondhand medium format cameras i New York?Eva
brucecahn
Dear Eva: Nothing is cheap in NYC anymore because of the greed of the landowners. Most of the small businesses have been closed, unless they sell lottery tickets. Those wonderful places full of ancient and newer used cameras are closed, or no longer handling much used equipment. Lens and Repro is the only place left that I know about that has good used equipment, and the prices are not cheap. You might call Photocare. Last time I was in there they were packing up a lot of film cameras to donate them to charity, but that was a while ago. B&H and Adorama both have used things, but not cheap. Also check Calumet. tom_overton
I've had pretty good service from Jimmy Koh. www.kohscamera.com. Again, they're not exactly cheap, but these days I tend to prefer service to economy. I have only dealt with him online, but I understand his shop is pretty far east of the city. (address in North Bellmore) If you're downtown, B&H is only a short walk to 9th and 34th. In my opinion, B&H is a must-see experience. Up the stairs to the Used Dept. is a much saner pace and lots of great gear... but as Bruce says, not cheap. Good luck. Tom
paul ron
As a native NYer I can tell you there are no bargains here. Better off shoping the classifieds of this and other photo forums. Buyer beware of e-bay since I've seen too many cameras in my shop come from there in some of the worst condition I have ever seen. The more you say, the less people listen. thomas_sullivan
KEH.com is probably your best bet. been dealing with them for years and am very happy with everything I purchased thru them....and yes, I live in NYC.
yuri_huta
The shops in NYC tend to be significantly (15-20%) higher than the same products from other sources. www.keh.com for consistency and integrity as well as better prices. They are quite conservative in their equipment ratings, so something from Adorama listed as EX (excellent) pales in comparison to something rated EX (excellent) at keh.com (in my experience). I have purchased some fairly priced items right here on photo.net ebay for great deals (you have to actively look) but you need to be diligent with questions and reading feedback. It is amazing how much people seem to overpay here as well, so it can serve you well to have fun with the bidding, but don't get your emotions tied into winning a product auction. I will buy things here and then sell them in a few months for a nice profit (sometimes over 50% profit ! !).
paul ron
Eva, what cameras are you interested in buying? Perhaps if you tell us, we may have one sitting in the closet. I have a ton of old cameras I've resored or not using that are just looking for new homes. paul ron, NYC automax1@juno.com The more you say, the less people listen.
