antonio_a.1
Hi, Quick questions: Anyone know the producton dates for the 80/2.8 CFI/CFE? Would be interested to learn which was produced first. I have a feeling it is probably the CFI but would like to hear from someone who knows for sure. Thanks.
q.g._de_bakker
Neither one came before the other one.
CFE lenses are CFi lenses, with additional Databus. Not all lenses were given that Databus, so there are CFi and CFE lenses, and all were introduced at the same time.
Some lenses - the 120 mm Makro-Planar for instance - switched between CFi and CFE and/or the other way (again) during their lifetime. q.g._de_bakker
Uhm... It's the 80 mm you're interested in. Sorry!
That started post-CF life as CFE lens, and still is an CFE lens today.
ken_wayne1
Yes, if you look at the rear of a CFi lens you will see the blank where the databus connection goes. Theoretically, I suppose you can get someone that knows what they are doing to turn a CFi lens into a CFE lens. You would just need the parts. If I recall correctly, I actually had one a couple of years back that said CFi on the barrel but had the databus connectors in the back so maybe that's what happened with that one. antonio_a.1
Thanks, So the 80/2.8 CFi would have been a contemporary of the 80/2.8 CFE then? Like a cheaper version without the databus contacts?
remi_lemarchand
There never was a 80 CFi - it went directly from CF to CFE. There was a 80 CB which was a different optical formula but with the same outside looks as the 80 CFE.
antonio_a.1
What do you mean there never was an 80 Cfi - I have seen several in the past. There is currently one on eBay as part of a 503CW set at the moment, see item 230245595321.
antonio_a.1
The lens refernce is 8926066. Zeis Planar CFI 2.8/80.
ken_wayne1
Yes, if you had the two of the same focal length CFi vs. CFe sitting side by side at B&H photo at one time the CFi would have been a little cheaper I'm sure. They don't have both types selling side by side at the moment ( and probably never will again and may have never sold them that way to begin with ) but to show you a difference B&H is currently selling a 100mm CFi for $3578.00 and yet they are offering a 120mm CFE for the price of $3348 so obviously there are other factors involved relative to supply, demand, etc. I just saw that Adorama has an 80mm CFi lens for $2488.00 and B&H has their 80mm CFE priced at $2484.00 so why buy a CFi when you could have the CFE for $4 less even if you didn't need the databus contacts. For resale value alone you should go with the CFE if the price is that close.
ken_wayne1
Yes, there was a CFi version. Adorama is selling one right now here
antonio_a.1
Interesting, maybee long term the one to collect would be the CFi, as it seems to be much rarer than the CFE ;-)
q.g._de_bakker
Click on the image Adorama shows to enlarge it and see what it reads on the lens. ;-)
Adorama also talks about the "CFE" lens in the rest of the advertisment.

But that's just sloppy advertising: the one on eBay certainly is a CFi lens.
The kit it comes in is from 2006, so they must have changed the lens from CFE to CFi a bit before that.
And come to think of it: haven't they changed all CFE lenses to CFi a short while ago? On their website, Zeiss still lists (! sloppy advertising ;-)) CFE lenses, but all the images they supply show CFi lenses. All of them.
antonio_a.1
I guess that makes sense if they no longer sell the 200 series bodies, which were the only ones that used the databus contacts...
paul_gardener
The latest 80 mm Planar is a CFi now. Most lenses will turn to CFi if they are vto be continued that is. Some lenses like the 120 CF and the 180 CF will go back from CFE to their former CFi specufiaction meaning CF> CFI> CFE > CFi. Any new lenses supplied now as CFE are old stock. It seems CZ does not produse any CFE lenses anymore.

bill_palmer2
I've gotten 3 new 80 mm Planar CFE's from Hasselblad USA in the last year in 503CWD kits. I'm not saying it isn't possible that the latest 80 mm Planar is back in CFi form, but I wonder why they are ordering new lenses if the pipeline is apparently full of CFE versions, and the cameras aren't exactly flying off the shelves? Of course, these have mostly been exchanges, and I suppose that they could have been assembled into kits in 2006 and the people who are buying plain 503CWs (both of them :-) are getting newer CFi lenses fresh from CZ...
