Do you understand rules?

Recommended Posts

Yann, maybe he did and maybe he didn't. Some members whole portfolios consist of only three photographs, though that is not the case here. More importantly, I believe the <i>spirit</i> of the No Words Forum is for each contributor to distill from their portfolios a single image that represents the best example of a particular theme. That is really a challenge in some cases and is a great excercise in learning how to conceptualize a given theme. Anyone can post a series of photographs on a subject. But to pick a single outstanding image is not so easy. Regards.

The three images are similar and I don't think two of them really fit the subject, but I don't think you broke the rules. It was just unnecessary. Mr Kazan broke the rules by posting text to a no words thread, imo. So did you in replying. Take it to the moderator.

If I start a no words thread, it is with one image. Sometimes during the run someone may post an image that inspires me to post a second. When the thread seems to have died and if I have another image, I may post a third as a closer.

Xiao Cai could have put his three photos in one, he could have posted one picture with the three photos side by side to illustrate "step by step" and nobody would say anything, but it would be exactly the same thing. He didn't post three photos, but a sequence. There was once a post "before/after" when people posted 2 photos.

Well, here are the rules from the stone tablet:

In a No Words thread the participants post photographs that represent different points of view or "visions" on a common theme, with the aim of creating an interesting group of photos on the theme.

If you are starting a new thread, pick the theme and the category. Pick a theme to which others can contribute. That is, don't make the theme so specific that nobody except for you will have photos on that theme. "Weddings" is fine (if a bit boring). "My Sister's Wedding" is getting a bit specific, but lots of people have photos of their sisters' weddings; so it is OK. "My Sister's Wedding, Los Angeles, 1990" isn't a theme; it's a caption, and the moderator will probably delete it. Any thread that has only one contributor will be deleted after 24 hours.

If you are responding, please post a photo related to the theme. If the thread is in one of the categories associated with an equipment-related forum on photo.net, such as "Leica Photography", "Nikon", etc, please post only photographs that were taken using that equipment.

The preferred method of posting photographs is to upload them directly to the forum. If necessary, they will automatically be resized so that they fit on a typical screen and don't take too long to download.

This is not a critique forum, although you can post a few words with your photo. The aim of the forum is not to provide a venue for people to "show off" their photos. If you want critique or comments on your photos, this is not the place. For critiques, please consider posting the photo to the photo.net Gallery.

No one person should monopolize a thread; this forum is not for "one-man shows". Please don't start more than one theme per day, unless the forum is slow that day. Join into the community by posting photos on themes started by others.

If you wish to upload a whole portfolio of photographs related to a theme or topic, please create a Folder or Presentation in your photo.net Gallery portfolio.

This forum does not lend itself to discussions. Post pure discussion threads, such questions about this forum, suggestions, complaints, adminstrative announcements, etc in the Site Feedback forum.

Maybe Xao Cai technically violated the letter of the law, but not the spirit - certainly not a hangin' offense. We don't all march in lock step.

As was pointed out, posting a complaint in that forum was also a violation.....

I seem to remember that the rules for the No Words forum used to say 'one photo' per participant but that rule seems to have disappeared in the latest list. However the forum list indicates the 'one photo' rule thus :

"No Words - Post a photo with a theme; responses come in the form of photos"

That seems to indicate that a single photo is expected as a start. I think it works better if the theme is started with one photo but as William said above - not a hanging offence.

(The most irritating thing is when someone starts a theme where the subject is so obscure that no one has a hope of participating.-Grrr)

I have updated the "About this Forum" text to say:

<p>

<i>"This is a "No Words" forum. Each thread in this forum is a series of photographs from different members on a single theme. You can start a new theme or post photos in response to themes started by others. Unless specifically addressed in the theme title (i.e. "Before & After"), users should only upload one image per theme."</i>

I don't understand why nobody participated in my No Words thread titled:

"My dog 'Fluffy,' a Peek-a-poo who was born April 7, 2005 in Fort Worth, Texas and in no way resembles any other dog named 'Fluffy' of any breed born anywhere, anytime."

For that matter, why didn't anyone participate in the 27 other No Words threads I started on Sunday about my paraplegic parakeet 'Spazz'; the one about my neighbor who plays his stereo too loud and throws beer cans in my yard; the 11 image series of triptychs about Radio Shack TRS-80 computers; or even the one titled "DIY Testicular Cancer Surgery"? I don't get it. Isn't anybody interested in the NW Forum anymore?
