This series is superb, and this is coming from someone who doesn't own a TV. You

can watch the entire first two episodes on YouTube.

i think they are fantastic, although it is discouraging to realize i will never be a "great"

photographer unless i use an 8x10 camera or a leica... ok, really, i have both of those, but

the leica is a "brand new to me" IIIf and my 8x10 hasn't seen the light of day in 10 years (but

still i keep it, i am not sure why). the interviews are top notch, i was sad to see they only did

a tiny snippet of Abelardo Morell, one of my favorites, although the format of the show may

show him again as the episodes are themed. If you haven't watched it, do yourself a favor

and watch them all. they are insightful and you will be inspired to go out and create!

correlation is not causation... you will never be a great photographer if you don't take

photography seriously... the fact that most people who take photography seriously use large

format is a different discussion matter.

It's taken me a couple of days to formulate an answer, and i still don't think i have a great

one to your comment Eugene, I have been taking pictures for over 20 years now, and

rarely does a week go by where i don't take a picture, whether it is still life, scenic, or just

pictures of my kids. I carry the leica with me where ever i go now, although i drive to and

from work and it only takes 10 minutes each way, so that is not as dedicated as it might

sound. I want to believe in my heart that the photographer makes the picture, not the

tool, but the tv series on the surface would like you to think otherwise. the photographers

featured do for the large part use leicas and 8x10's, but they also talk a ton about the

process that gets them to the picture so maybe the tool isn't as important. I do believe

that if someone like Sally Mann or Joel Meyerowitz picked up a hundred dollar kodak

digital from walmart, they would make magic with it. I guess when it comes down to it,

the film makers were targeting a specific population of photographers (people, innovators,

etc.) and it may have been coincidence that the tools they use were very similar.

So to answer your comment, i do think i take photography seriously, i just use different

tools. My comment, by using quotes around "great", was meant as a bit of a jab to their

choices of photographers, but as i have seen most of the episodes twice now, i really do

think everyone they interviewed and talked about is really a master of the medium, or

should i say genius?
