Max and his Nikons

In a recent thread someone mentioned that at one time the Olympus OM1 was the

"Official" camera of United Press International. Apparently no one ever told my

friend Max.

Max Guiterrez (sp?) was a photographer for UPI. When I first met him in the late

1960s he was working out of San Francisco as a wire photo technician. Later he

became a full time shooter for UPI based out of Portland, Oregon.

In the early 1970s Max fell in love with the Nikon F2. He always had two within

reach and two brand new ones-still in the packaging in his closet--just in case

Nikon was ever dumb enough to quit making them.

Max covered a lot of big events for UPI including the Sunshine Mine Disaster in

Northern Idaho (his life was threatened there) and The American Legion National

Convention in Portland, Ore., when Vietnam Peace protesters tried to shut it down.

I lost track of Max in the later 1970s. I was wondering if anyone out there knew

Max or what happened to him. Probably would be in his mid to late 70s by now.

Max retired when UPI shut down and was working for some private clients and occasionally on the counter at Citizens Photo in Portland. Haven't seen him for a while, but haven't been in the store, either.

Olympus made cash-strapped UPI a killer deal on equipping its photographers but the honeymoon was fairly short, from the stories I have been told.
