angkor wat temple climbing

Doog is a good friend of mine. His NGO is doing awesome work, but the gov't doesn't seem committed to serious preservation of these temples. I just heard that they are no longer allowing people up the main tower of Angkor. True? If so, too little too late.

<p>

With 2 million low end package tourists trampling the place, I no longer encourage people to visit unless they go in the off season. Glad I visited a few dozen times in the mid 90s.

The upper level of Angkor Wat was closed Oct 1st after a number of serious accidents involving tourists.

I was at Angkor a few days ago and saw a new stairway completed on the SE Corner. Work is still in progress which I expect to be wooden steps and walkway to protect the monument.

The latest Angkor Development Last week was the much awaited lighting up of Angkor Wat in the evenings. I was there in 2nd night on Thursday it is a spectacular sight . and I?ve not seen Angkor Wat so empty as no one knew about it. Interestingly enough the authorities have provided lightweight tripods for free use at strategic points round the temple. They are OK for point and shoot cameras but any serious photographer would have to use their own.

The old notice at the gate banning large tripods and professional camera (which was rarely enforced) has been replaced: but the strict commercial filming rules still apply..

The cost of $15 for an after dark visit suggests very strongly that access to the top level of Angkor Was will be restricted by Price!

That is of course my personal option not fact yet!

if you keep an eye on www.peaceofangkor.com you will find a lot of info and an update after I return from a remote Temple Tour at the end of the month (Feb)

I am constantly searching out new sites and routes and together with my team of guides we are keeping up do date and putting this information on our website.

Regards
