henry_ninh
I have a Nikon 18-200mm Nikon lenses that slide when I pointed it downward. Is it common finding with other owners? Do I need to send it in for repair? Thanks
phototransformations
This is called lens creep. Nikon probably won't fix it. I sent my lens in for this and other problems, and the lens creep was exactly the same. You can compensate for it by putting four strips of electrical tape on the most-extended end of the barrel, parallel to the length of the barrel. That seems to add enough friction to minimize or eliminate the creep, at least for a while. It's a really annoying "feature." Some lenses ship with no creep, but most have creep. Matt Laur
Just a reminder: if you put that lens into the 18mm position, it will NOT creep out. That's the way to carry it.
ShunCheung
The "zoom creep" issue on the 18-200 DX has been discussed many times in this forum. Please search on that term and you should find a lot of previous discussion.
peter_k4
yeap, mine sure does it, didn't when it was brand new, but has been starting. it's really only bad from about 35-70, I'll take a picture, point it down to look at it on the screen, then go back to take another one and it's zoomed out on me. Just one more reason why I am considering selling this lens.
josh_standon
Yes, this lens has zoom creep. It is normal for this lens. Enjoy the fact that you own the same lens used to take American Photographer's Nature photo of the year.
Peter_in_PA
It's a minor annoyance, and btw, when you put it at 18mm, it will eventually creep. So I will often put it at 200 when I point it down. It doesn't bother me in the slightest... EXCEPT when I am shooting straight down, which I do from time to time. jim p
There is an easy "fix" to this unfortunate and annoyingly common problem. You can get a rubber gasket (sort of like a round super rubber band) at a hardware store and slip it over the barrel of the lens and position it on the joint between the zoom ring and the barrel. The friction will keep it from creeping. It makes the zooming a little stiff, but it works!
