CP stuck on 10-22! Help?

Dan,

There are two rings on your CP. The first (outer one) rotates the filter. The second (inner one) mounts to the lens. Turning the outer one will not remove the filter without some luck. What you need to do is turn the inner ring while holding the lens to prevent it from rotating.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. I got it off. Wheew! I had just spent more on a filter than most the other cameras I have owned. That was scary. I read in an old post to use light pressure. I may have been grabbing it too hard when it did not come off easily on the first try. I just grasped the knurled inner ring lightly with index finger and thumb and it came right off. No force required. But I can't figure out why it stuck in the first place. I did not tighten it very much at all. Is there an oil or something you put on the threads to keep them from sticking? Or could that damage the coating on the filter/lens? Any ideas welcome. I do not want this to happen again. That was stressful. Thanks guys!

When this happens, I always think of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Popeil">The Cap Snaffler</a>. Brought to you by Ron Popeil, inventer of the "Veg-O-Matic" - which was lampooned on Saturday Night Live by Dan Aykroyd and his "Bass-O-Matic" - and of course, The Pocket Fisherman - "The biggest fishing invention since the hook...and still only $19.95!"<P>

The "Cap Snaffler" was nothing more than a round, rubber grip you used to get a good grip to get lids of jars. ;-)

Dan, do NOT use any liquid oil or grease anywhere near a lens. You can use a bit of candle wax rubbed into the thread of the filter, or as Beau says, a bit of pencil graphite. However, personally I've found wax much more effective than graphite, since the pencil "lead" wears off very quickly.

Glad you got it off.

"But I can't figure out why it stuck in the first place."

I think it is down to technique, specially if you panic, the knurling on the main body of the more recent CP designs help a lot, specially with low profile filters like the Pro 1s.

I see a lot of posts that some filters stick a lot of which claim this is because the base material is aluminium. Considering that all these filters are plated anyway and most lens filter threads are plastic these days I think this is nonsense.

If you are ever having real difficulties put a rubber band around the filter body - this gives more grip. Can't say I have ever had this trouble myself.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I think Colin described what I did. It stuck, ever so briefly, and I started to freak out and gave it a good hard turn with pressure on two sides only, and it flexed/distorted. When I got it off, I was using very light pressure, hence, not flexing the filter and it unscrewed just as easily as it had went on. No harm, no foul. But I will be cautious of this in the future. Sounds like a dry graphite lubricant (key hole lubricant) would be a good choice to keep filters from sticking. Thanks for the help guys.

I have has a few stuck filters in my time,. Nothing that could not be removed but some that have caused a moment's worry. I think the main reason they get stuck is expansion due to changeing temperatures.

The filter mounts on lenses are plastic, while filter threads are normally metal and each will expand differently as temperatures change. If you put a cold filter on a lens there is scope for thermal expansion to make it very tight and gripping it with fingers can make it worse.
