derek_deboer1
Hi there, I just bought a new 1.4D 50mm nikkor lens for my D80 and was shockedat the AF noise. I realize that there is no internal motor like my quiet 18-135AF-S, but I was really taken back by the noise. Is this normal for prime AF lenses? Also, when manually focussing, it's not entirely quiet. If listening carefully, you can hear very small tiny clicks. The lens takes good photos and operatesperfect with the camera, I was just wondering if this normal or not. Thanks

hermanjr
i own one, i can tell you that that it is VERY normal to hear that. The AF is not internal it uses a "flat screw head" to move the insde of the lens mechanicly fon body to lens. Therefore you hear the noise, unless you have a AF-S lens, that has the focusing motor built into the lens, that noise is normal. But hey! ITS a f/1.4, very good for a low light enviroments.hav fun wiht your new lens, Herman!
eric_arnold
there are rumors nikon is coming out with a 50/1.4 AF-S, which may not help in your situation, since you already own the 50/1.4. if you want a prime with an internal motor right now, check out the sigma 30/1.4, which has HSM. cmulcahy
I purchased a 50mm f/1.4 last month. It would make plenty of noise when in AF, occasionally it would search for a focus and would REALLY make a lot of noise. This concerned me so I took the lens back and ordered one from B&H. The new copy was MUCH quieter and it never chatters when struggling to find focus. You didn't buy this lens in Madison, Wi did you? That's were I returned mine. lol The new copy I purchased AF'ed MUCH quicker and quieter. It's not as quiet as my AF-S lens but it's pretty close. So I wonder if you didn't get a copy similar to my first one. Also - my 2nd copy I bought produced a sharper picture wide open then the first, I think my first copy really struggled to actually focus like it should in AF mode. frankeleveld
My 50mm f/1.4 is slightly quieter than the 50mm f/1.8. Could be because of the focus gear train in the latter being slightly less smooth.
