craig_supplee Posted January 6, 2008 Share Posted January 6, 2008 I don't want to make you feel bad for spending so much on your "new" camera, but McKeown's says it is known as "the poor man's Leica", and gives its value at $150-200. I have three -- my first one from 1973 (still going strong) and two others still in factory boxes bought after they quit making them because I expected the original to break long ago. gatorgums Posted January 6, 2008 Author Share Posted January 6, 2008 Well, l was not at all impressed with this "poor mans Leica"! The Olympus trip 35 ( the metal version) takes better pics in my opinion. Maybe it was the that the px625 ( being used as is right in the camera) was at the wrong voltage, or maybe it could have been the cheap film, but the pictures had a green cast and the shadows were a bit muddy. Over saturated too, but l have to add that Walmart spit them out so who knows. What l liked about the pics was the high contrast though. I would like to get the dent out of the ring but i don't know how. Honestly, i was just going to give it back to the Goodwill. I am not saying they are bad, but really, i like to use my cameras and collect them. It will not be on E bay! I did not put the price to show off but rather to just point out that they are popping up more and more , thats all. In the next post after this i will put up a few pics. Thanks for all of your remarks! Leicas and the like don't impress me at all- just because someone has a Canon "L" lens does that automatically make the photographer's pictures more artistic than the next persons? winfried_buechsenschuetz1 Posted January 6, 2008 Share Posted January 6, 2008 Unless you are shooting with a VERY crappy lens, the problems with image quality you describe rather refer to the film and/or processing/printing. I think, too, that the S3 is somewhat overrated, since there are some "clones" of that camera with almost the same quality. The Minolta Hi-Matic 7SII, for example, is virtually the same camera, and has manual aperture setting, too (it lacks the auto-flash feature). There is also the Revue400SE (sold in Germany only by Foto-Quelle) which is based on the same design. The meter circuitry is somewhat simplified and the meter always should be checked against a good one with the Revue. Anyhow, all the cameras mentioned are able to take very good pictures. As i said, the photos were very very contrasty but as to sharpness, who could reall objectvely say.
