New 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS lens

This lens didn't creep out of the Amazon woodwork yesterday. It isn't USM, but

does offer 4 stop IS, including panning detection (but not apparently tripod

detection), like its 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens brother. There are interesting

An EF-S telephoto? I wondered how long it would be until we saw one of these. Interesting to see how the IQ compares to other teles in this class.

I wish Canon will start following Nikon in the prime route i.e. make a 100/2.8 IS and 200/1.8 IS, rather than the zoom route.

USM versions will likely arrive in March-April...

Basically like a 100-400 on 35mm film....buy why no USM? I'd rather get the 70-300 IS USM, or if I wanted to go cheap, one of the 75-300 models. Is there really a market for IS lenses that don't have a USM?

USM has nothing to do with IS.

 

That lens have small and light elements that dont neccessarily need USM to to AF fast.

 

FWIW, I'd rather have the IS than the USM, If I were to choose just one feature.

I`m thinking the 400d + 18 55IS + this 55 250 IS has gotta make a great entry level kit, so light probably won`t even need a tripod.

Yes...I know. Not physically, anyhow. What I am saying is that the types of customers who want IS (in other words, those who have the photographic knowledge to even know what it's good for) are likely to want a USM as well, and that in most cases those who want one are going to want the other. A lens without USM is worthless to me, as I want to be able to focus by hand or by motor at any time. It's the only reason I don't have a 50mm f/1.8. I have used it, and it's optically good enoug...I just find it to be difficult for manual use, and the AF to be slow and noisy. I'd rather have an old manual focus lens than one of the non-USM AF lenses.

I'd guess this is another example of Canon's answer to "in body" stabilization.

 

For those users who would buy the IS versions of the 18-55 and 55-250, that's probably the only set of lenses they will ever own. I'd guess these lenses are aimed at XTi users. Lenses made to the lowest possible price to keep the introductory system cost down.

 

 

I wouldn't be surprised to see an XTi packaged with an 18-55IS and 55-250IS as a kit. I wonder if they can keep the cost below $1000?

 

With these lenses USM hardly matters. It's a micro USM motor, not a ring motor. Not exactly fast or silent and no FTM.

@Keith: The 75-300's are dogs optically, and even the USM ones don't focus any faster than micro-motor lenses. The only advantage of USM on the 75-300 is it's quieter. I expect the 55-250 will be optically better than the 75-300, so it will be a much better choice.

Is that a way to confuse the consumers? "EF-S mount" expression can make think some type of amazon buyers that they cannot use EF lenses.

Pity it won't be very effective with those nice fast primes like the 50/1.4 and 85/1.8.... :-(

Hi all I have been reading the forum over the last week or two searching for any thing on the new 55-250 IS lens , so have joined up to let you know what is happening in Australia in regardes to this lens.

I have ordered a new Canon 400D with the twin lens kit 18-55 / 55-250 with IS and expecting to pick it up in the next week or two from Camera House it has been advertised for two weeks now cost will be $1449 Australian , this is my first DSLR so can't wait to get it.

The salesman at a photo shop in London had one, boxed, for ?200 inc VAT. By UK standards,

that's not too bad a price - there are places selling it for ?235. We didnt' go for it - I haven't

seen a single review and we didn't want to have to trek back there if the lens proved

disappointing.

Broken link; any other tests? Even user ones, as long as they give picture examples to compare w/ some other lens?

I am not a serious photographer but I did run out and buy this lens today because it was a really nice day and I had nothing else to do.

 

I am impressed with this lenses performance. Here are a few photos I took within moments of my new purchase. I slapped this lens onto my camera even before getting in the car.

I'm considering this lens to get more focal length, but am concerned that it cannot be manually focused (fine-tuned) in AF. Has this proven to be a problem for you?
