james_drescher
I am having a little trouble trying to find out how to change my F Stop / aperture on My new 5D while in manual mode I know that the wheel by the trigger controls my shutter. Any help is much appreciated.
alec_myers
wheel on the back - don't forget to switch the on/off/thingy switch to the third position to activate the wheel.
evphotography
It is controled by rear wheel on back and you have to make sure and have on/off switch to the very top mark so the rear wheel is activiated.
david_wu6
Or read the instructions on P. 90 of the Manual, which has graphic illustrations.
tim_klimowicz
I know manuals are generally no fun to read, but seriously, take a look at the manual. I spent a couple hours with the manual when I first got the 30D, which was a huge (and slightly more complicated) step up from the old AE-1 Program film camera I shot with previously, and it really paid off, getting me comfortable with literally every little setting on the camera in no time. I'd hate to think of how much more of a struggle it would have been since then if I hadn't invested the short amount of time.

mendel_leisk
Any time Canon wants to give this "feature" the heave-ho would be fine with me. It's a less than useless source of confusion for lots of people.
anders_carlsson
I wish that the rear wheel could be more customized. On my 20D I'd like to switch the functions of the rear wheel and the wheel next to the shutter button, for instance. Is that possible on the 5D? robin_sibson1
Anders, the feature to switch the functionality of the two control wheels in manual mode is limited to the 1-series cameras (and the EOS-3, if I remember correctly, which is/was a 1-series camera in its operational design). I certainly swapped over on my 1V and miss the capability on the various non-1-series digital cameras I have subsequently used, including the 5D. The only hardware change it might require is the replacement of some hard wiring by firmware, and even that might not be necessary, it might well be a pure firmware issue, so it would not cost Canon anything significant to give us this capability. www.philwinterphotography.
The ability to swap wheels would be a great change. I frequently shift from AV to M and vice versa. In Av mode, the control wheel (by the shutter release) controls aperture and the main dial (on the back) controls shutter speed for exposure compensation. But in M mode the controls are reversed. The control wheel controls shutter speed and aperture control has shifted to the control wheel. Very Confusing.
tim_klimowicz
I'm with Phil, as I'm sure many other people are. I really can't fathom how such a huge, huge, huge design flaw made it past the early stages, and into every camera since....what, the 10D? Earlier, even? I'm not one to get tripped up on gadgets (grew up with em!), but the differing functions of the main wheel and the thumb wheel absolutely KILL me when I switch from mode to mode. One wheel should ALWAYS be just one function regardless of mode, and offering the simple custom function of swapping would be sufficient enough for those who prefer it different, I think.
