duncan.kat
I currently own a rebel XT and am looking to upgrade to a more advanced digital SLR. I am going into photography school (hopefully into photojournalism) so weight is a little bit of a issue since most of my photography is done on the move. I have a few models in mind, but I wanted to see if there were any sugestions based on other people's experiences. Thanks!
leopoldstotch
What didn't you like about the XT? Its hard to recommend anything without knowing that.
joshroot
Might as well get a 5D. Moving up to the 30/40D series will just get you different handling, not appreciably different quality. And believe me, weight is over-rated in this instance. Many of the great images in photojournalism were made with cameras much heavier than anything you will be buying today. It's not the tool in your hands, it's the tool between your ears that makes great images.
geoffs1
Any of the newer/more-advanced Canon (or Nikon) models would be a step up. Many mainstream photojournalists have become accustomed to large camera bodies like the Canon 1D and Nikon D2 series (except for specialized applications where size or silence is crucial), so unless you plan on some extraordinary work, I don't think size is an issue. As Leopold says, much depends on what you plan to do. The XT is a very capable camera. It's limitations are: relatively slow continuous-mode shooting and older AF system. The XTi has an improved AF (the same as the 20D/30D), and slightly higher resolution. The 20D/30D have better AF, sturdier build, 5 FPS, and different/better ergonomics. The 40D has an even better AF than the 30D, more pixels, and 6.5 FPS. The 1D series is larger, with dramatically better AF, buffer-size, and build (including weather sealing). Just there you have a range of size from something close to your XT (the XTi) up to nearly "brick sized" (the 1D), with prices from $600 to $6000. Personally, I think the 40D is in a pretty "sweet spot" in the price/performance scale. If you don't need the higher frame rate, better AF, and slightly higher resolution, I'd look next at the 30D. If that's too much money, a used/refurb 20D might do. If size and cost is important then the XTi is there. And finally, if you don't have any strong AF, FPS, or resolution issues with your XT, keep it and buy some nice glass instead...
geoffs1
Opps, "what Josh said"... I completely forgot the 5D. Basically a 20D with full-frame sensor. If you want outstanding image quality at a moderate price and don't need high FPS then it's the right choice.
geoffs1
<p>Oh yeah, if you're really interested in light, quiet, and have excess cash lying around, you could always get <a href="http://www.leica-camera.us/photography/m_system/m8/">this</a>... <b><listing>;-)</listing></b></p>
ronald_moravec1
These are like house and cars, you can spend as much as you want. But why? How is the XT limiting you?
rvalois
Hi Geoff ... Just took a look at the Leica link you published ... I certainly would not argue Leica quality or the lenses but I simply can't understand placing the flash - assuming that it is a flash - an inch (or less) just above the lens ?! That's instant red-eye just like any run-of-the-mill P&S and awful lighting. Ray

joris_hekelaar
I would argue that the only way to get even better pictures then the one you can make with the Rebel XT, is to go for a full size sensor. The gain: you'll lose noise on low light/high ISO conditions. So, go for the 5D or step up to EOS1D mark III. Good Luck, Joris
julian_kirkpatrick
i've been the proud owner of a 40d for the past month and a half and can recommend it without hesitation to anybody who is looking to upgrade Canon from a rebel x series. the 14bit power of the 40d is just remarkable, plus if you do some careful shopping, you can snag a 40d with a couple lenses and a memory card for less than $1900. wonderful investment for photography school, which i am currently attending. several of the people with whom i go to school have gone and bought 40d's due to the shots that i've taken with mine, and have not looked back since. good luck to you! kev_400d
Depends what you're looking for, what your budget is. If you want more pixels one of these could fit the bill: http://www.slrtoday.com/articles/64/1/The-Seitz-160-Megapixel-D3-Digital-Camera/Page1.html
duncan.kat
Thanks to everyone for their answers! :) It helped, I ended up selling my XT and upgrading to the 40D. I didn't have the cash flow for the 5D, and i heard a new version will be coming out soon so maybe once that appears I can snag the 5D for less. Thanks again!
