wannabe
How do I set my 40D to ISO3200 or H? I read, re-read, then re-re-read my manual. I used the custom function to expand the ISO, but I can only get to "H" ISO in the C1/C2/C3 modes. It is the same as ISO 100. I can get down to ISO 200, then the camera goes to ISO "Auto". I can get to ISO 100 only in the C1/C2/C3. Is this how the 40D works or am I missing something? Thanks in Advance!
medina photography cherry
If you have the command dial on the green rectangle (on the left side of camera) this puts the camera in complete auto, where it chooses everything. Put the command dial in either "P", "AV", "TV" or "M" and you can control the camera. When the ISO reads "H" it is at it's highest setting, i.e. 3200
jay_lang
Must be doing something wrong. my 40d goes to 100 after auto when i turn the dial on the back. Have another go, u might have just turned the wheel too fast and missed it.
andrew_duncan
Have you got highlight tone priority enabled? If you do you can only set ISO between 200 and 1600. You can easily check as the ISO display in the viewfinder and the LCD panel will look like 2oo rather than 200. Check page 157 of the manual. andrew_duncan
Hmm ... that didn't work. According to page 157 of the manual, if you have highlight tone priority enabled, the trailing zeros in the iso are smaller (lower case?) than they are when it is disabled. zigzag
This is probably irrelevant to the 40D but on the 30D you have to turn on ISO expansion using Custom Function 8.
zml
Turn ISO Expansion (CF I-3) on.
bobatkins
It's <a href="http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/canon_eos_40D_review_6.html#highlight">Highlight Tone Priority</a>. When on it only allows ISO 200-1600 to be set. You don't have it set for C1, C2 and C3.
colinsouthern
Same issue on the 1D3 - it would be nice to have a CF that gave us the choice of automatically disabling HTP when selecting ISO extremes.
wannabe
Thank you everyone for your responses! Bob & Andrew, you were both correct. I had the highlight tone priority enabled. (BTW, I LOVE this camera!)
big kahuna1
Bob Wins. I have been fighting this same problem for 1 week today, and I have not been able to set 100 or 32oo. Turn off the Highlight Tone Priority, Problem solved. I much prefer that I have ISO 100 and Meter properly than a grainy image with highlights. Thanks Bob. (BTW, EVERYONE LOVES THIS CAMERA!) we are just lucky enough to have one.
bambam_ilusorio
Thanks guys, I was struggling with the same problem. I however would love this camera more if the LCD was a bit more faithful to colors (but that's just me). Surely a giant leap though, this camera, from a 10D. strippedsoul
hi there I bought a Canon 40d and I found out the same problem today and I felt so disappointed because I worked the menu and I couldn't find out what is wrong while I had the iso extension enabled ..I was going to send my camera to get fixed but after the Christmas because I need it..so I thought to search to google about iso problems ..the strange thing is that iso works from 200-1600 and the numbers are different shown to the panel the for example for iso 400 the number is shown 4oo instead of 400 ...so I followed your instructions about highlight priority and the "problem" is fixed..Thank you so much ..you made my day..:):)
