walter_strong4
My wife has decided that her G3 is just too "yesterday" and is expecting a new P&S for Xmas. She wants something thinner, lighter, and a larger screen. I'm willing to pay up to $500 for this camera but right now I don't have much of an idea what'd fill the bill. BTW, it really does not HAVE to be a Canon but I had to pick a catagory................so, whatta ya think might do the job?
nick_bumgardner
I thank that a Canon G9 fits the bill perfectly. It comes in at about $450. It is 12mp, 6x optical zoom, and a 3in lcd screen. It is also smaller and lighter than the G3.
michael s.
<< ... a Canon G9 fits the bill perfectly ... >> It might, unless she would miss the pivot/swivel lcd on her G3 and does not require RAW, in which case the Canon A650 would be worth a look. howardfuhrman
While I love my Canon G9 and think it is a wonderful choice, there are other digicams worth considering Since I had a G2, I can say that the G9 is better in practically every way than your wife's G3, it is smaller, faster, has a larger LCD which she will be able to see in bright sunlight, the controls are more accessable. The G9's sharp lens is slower f2.8 than the f2.0 lens on the G3, but the G9 has IS (image stabilization) which the G3 does not have. The G3's small dull, articulating LCD, has been replaced in the G9 with a fixed, beautiful, bright 3" LCD. If your wife likes to shoot landscapes the small, Ricoh GX100 with its fine 24-72mm lens should be considered. While she will gain a very nice wide angle starting at 24mm with the GX100, she will give up the long 210mm zoom on the G9. The Fuji F50fd is also worth a look. From user's comments, the F50fd is usable up to ISO 800 and is smaller, lighter, and more affordable than either the G9 or GX100 and it meets your wife's criteria. Its zoom range is approximately 35 to 100mm, just not as long as the G9's 210mm. There are many other P&S that meets your wife's requirements, but if your wife values quality IQ, I would recommend the G9.
