tim_drake
Does putting a super multicoated UV filter on the front of a Rolleiflex improve image quality to any noticeable degree? Thanks
runkel
There is no reason to think that it would improve image quality at all. If anything, it would very slightly degrade image quality. patric_dahl_n
A filter adds two more glass surfaces to the optical system, and therefore more reflections. It could also degrade image quality if it isn't absolutely flat. But a multicoated filter is little better than a single coated. An UV-filter is unnecessary if you aren't in an enviroment with much UV-light (at sea or at high altitudes). The anti-reflection coatings are there to let more light through the glass - the light that otherwise would have been reflected and cause lower contrast. It's a misconception that coatings *filters out reflections*. An uncoated lens with a super duper multicoated filter would still be an uncoated lens. The internal reflections would still be there, and sligtly more of them because of the added filter glass.

dougmiles
Agree with Matthew and Patric... But, given the use of a filter, a better quality filter with multi-coating is preferable to a lower quality filter.
