Vintage "Made in Hong Kong" items do have a certain cache to them.

Ponder if you will, the person who made this camera. He or she was probably a refugee from Mao's newly declared People's Republic of China. They might not even have been literate. They would have lived in a home built squatter's shack with no running water or toilet. If they were lucky enough to reside in Government- built public housing, they would have had to share a toilet and kitchen facilities with a dozen or so other tenants from the same floor. Entire families in the 50's and 60's were supported by their parents building cheap items like Babette.

Somewhere in Hong Kong lives a sucessful professional, an accountant or lawyer, a millionaire in US$ terms. He may or may not know that his grand-parents hand assembled little toy -like objects to survive, but he owe's his well-being to their hard work and thrift.

Jerry in Hong Kong.
