Got my 40D today!

Today I called up Calumet, and learned they had a few bodies earlier this morning, and had just sold out.

Then I did a search of camera stores in the area, and found one i hadn't heard of, a small mom and pop

place...and they had a couple in stock! So I went right down there, and went for it. An early birthday

present for me!

Wow, it feels so good in the hand, so much more substantial than my XT of course. I went right out and

shot some photos while there was still light. They're in my new folder here http://www.photo.net/photodb/

folder?folder_id=760417

So far, I'm really happy with it, and it seems to have less noise at high ISO. One thing that I have yet to

figure out, though, is the sRAW files. It isn't compatible on Aperture it seems, nor anything else. For some

reason, although I thought I just chose that, it came out with a JPEG, and I was able to open those at least.

I installed the software, but not sure how to use it for this, yet. Maybe I should just shoot real RAW then

for now. Or high quality JPEG.

Such a nice camera!

Great stuff! With Dog as your co-pilot, you have a bright future with that camera! :-)

(p.s. to others--a reference to your photo gallery front page)

The cameras just get better and better.

I'll bet you'll need to be patient with Aperture and Photoshop. All these new camera raw files

are proprietary, even though the CR2 extension is the same. I don't get it either, that's just

how it is. Watch and check for the updates; they'll catch up soon. Keep shooting RAW with

JPEG until then!

I'll check later on this evening to see for sure, but the beach ones, the bird, and the bird of

paradise are all 350 and above. I don't think I got LIghtroom...I got Digital Photo Professional

3.1 and a few others. Weird.

Well (yawn) I'm up and off to get ready for my nephew's football game.

<<BTW, Nice photos.<<

Oh, thanks..I was just farting around, mostly. I only had a couple hours of daylight left, and

took a few while eating out on a restaurant patio (hence, the sparrows) Today I really broke in

the camera. Morning it was Pop Warner football game, then some in Balboa Park, the zoo,

and a dog park. Filled up a 4GB card and then some! They're uploading to Aperture right now

:) So I'll replace those photos with some from this batch, especially ones that I think are a

huge improvement over my XT, with higher ISO and such.

Oh no. Not good. I shot all the stuff after the football game in RAW..and nothing recognizes

it, either! It says CR2, and it's an unsupported image format. They're all square, too, oddly.

1:1 ratio. What on earth? I'm going to have to read through the software, and see if I can get

these to open, or I'll be very depressed. That's a lot of photos! Argh...

you will probably have to open/view your files in DPP until apple releases an update with camera support for the 40D. The following is from creativepro.com "For each camera that Aperture supports, Apple has defined a profile that specifies how the raw data should be interpreted and converted into a normal full-color image." Since the 40D is just a week old or so on the market, there hasn't been an update yet, as 1.5.4 is still the current version. The last update added support for the Leica M8, so I would expect an update in the next week or so.

just open up DPP and then from there open the folder containing your new CR2 files. they will open for you to view. change whatever you want per photo. then when finished. click batch process. pick your resolution, file type and output folder. hit execute, sit and wait....you'll be able to then take them and put them through whatever software you wish.

Thanks. I saved some as TIFF files at first, but not sure that was a good idea, since it won't go

to JPEG after that, just JPEG2000. So for now, I should just maybe transfer to a DVD-R, then

to the DPP and save which ones I like. Funny how you get used to doing things a certain way,

and a wrench gets thrown in, and really throws you off!

Or, I can just shoot JPEG for a few weeks.
