Does Nikon 35-70mm f3.5-4.8 AIS work with D40X

Depends on what you mean by "work".

It will mount and take pictures. You will have no autofocus (naturally), no in-camera TTL metering, and you will only be able to use it in manual exposure mode (as with your FM10). It also may not be easy to get consistently accurate manual focus with the dim viewfinder image.

There are certainly better lenses for a D40X, but what the heck, you've already got it, right? :-)

Can it work? Yes. Why would be another question. Tripod and light meter sure. Or you could focus via distance to subject and DOF and remember your exposure data. Kind of like shooting a 4x5 only the big camera has a better focusing screen.

Like Mr. Freeman says, it costs nothing, give it a whirl.:-)
