"The dollar is weaker than ever. However, folks in the UK appear to be getting screwed. I just looked at Jessops' website, and they have the body listed for GBP 899, which equates to about US$1800. Is that typical of the UK market?"

Must be the higher tax and higher overhead cost in UK. Just think about it this way, You may have paid higher in UK , but you dont have to fly across the continent to roam europe, to take beautiful pictures :).

I went to our Canon dealer and serves centre here in Daejeon, South Korea. Apparently the 40D will arrive this coming Wednesday of Tuesday at W 1,450,000-00 which is about $1500-00. Asking why it cost much more than the Canon International price, they say you get service with it ? any time you bring the camera in from either a cleaning to testing etc, it will be for free. I must say that their services are really good, but for the different in price? Please let me know what kind of service deals you get where every you are.

"If one does go to Canada and buys a camera, what are the taxes and other charges to be aware of?"

Canadian Goods and Services Tax is 6%, and each province has different provincial tax levels.

But as a non-Canadian, you can get all your tax refunded from our gov't by filling out a form and sending it in.

For those thinking about buying from Canada (or anywhere other than their home country) - BE AWARE of WARRANTY issues !

Is saving some $$ worth the hassle if you need your gear serviced ?

Do your homework before putting down your cash.

To the OP: Yes! It is about time we canucks didn't feel the wrath of the exchange rates. I wonder if the USA 28-135/IS kit will be offered in Canada for the same good price ?

You are unlikely to have warranty issues buying in Canada or the US and taking it cross-border, they come with US/Canada warranties as James said. What no longer happens is the GST refund for visitors, the Canadian government stopped doing that earlier this year. So your Canadian price will be increased by 6% plus whatever the province charges.

Louise - there was recently a show on CBC Raio where the Minister responsible for CCRA said that the refund does still exist - it is just not as simple to get. He directed listeners to the CCRA (Canada's IRS) to the web site for details. I paid no mind as it didn't affect me.

Man tho, with the exchange rate and all, I think I'll be buying the body here and the 120-300 in Buffalo and use it before I return.
