butch_welch
Has anyone used the Hasselblad 180mm Sonnar with the 1.4 and 2x converters? How good is this combo for B&W?
wai_leong_lee
The converters have nothing to do with black and white. It just makes things appear closer, and the resolution falls. The converter does of course make the cameras almost non-handholdable, due to the loss of at last 1 or 2 stops.
simonpg
Butch I have used my CF 180mm with the 1.4x a few times and see no visible lost image quality. I have been amazed how well that 1.4x works with each lens I have added it to - 120, 150, 180, 250mm. Of course under a microscope there will be lost resolution etc., but in print quality I cannot see any reduction in image quality that would make me not use it (of course a prime lens always out-performs a prime + 1.4x extender technically). It is an excellent product and a surprise since it is made by Fuji not Zeiss, yet it is designed for use with Zeiss glass! I have no idea about the 2.0x. wayne_haas
I have used the CF 180 with both the 1.4XE and 2XE: my sentiment re. the 1.4XE mirrors Simon's; the results from the 2XE were very much within the acceptable range. The loss of two stops with the 2XE is quite telling when shooting in less than sunny conditions as the split rangefinder on the focusing screen (even if an AcuteMat D) will, more often than out, black-out if viewed slightly off-center. The 1.4XE balances the 180 nicely when hand-holding the camera; the 2XE is possibly even better in that regard. But, as always, shooting on a tripod will produce sharper results :-) In short: I kept the 1.4XE as it quite handy in extending the versatality of a light carry-around kit; I kept the 2XE for a only a short time before trading it off -- note: the fact that the 2XE is generally quite plentiful on KEH, and that the 1.4XE is rarely ever listed, may tell you something.
