Jonathan, please post at least one (your favourite) here on the Leica forum as a W/NW.

"Tom", we each have our own reasons for our equipment choices, some reasons more carefully-reasoned than others. Market leaders depend on the herd mentality to maintain their market position; people who are unsure of what features they need are reasured by buying into a popular system. Canon leveraged this very common human trait with high-visibility product placement and pro support to maintain this visibility. The big profits aren't in sales to pros, it's in sales to amateurs and amateurs feel safest buying what the pros use. That's a herd mentality and it applies to all kinds of products. It's only an insult if you see yourself where you don't want to be in this marketing strategy.

>>> that insult spills over onto a large group of members of this forum.

Yes, Douglas' characterization of herd dovetails nicely with many lecia owners here - great

marketing on leica's part. It really has little to do withl being a market leader, though. Yes,

the leica herd...

I hope the question doesn't become, would you rather be part of a herd or part of a cult.

I wonder why some people become so identified with their choice of camera and not the content of their images.

I also wonder why some people who believe their choices in cameras are so perfect and so well reasoned can spend so much time and effort degrading other brands and those that would choose them.

Getting back to the original article, I think it is important to note that while Erwin is rather new to the digital world, he is trying to run tests that will be of specific interest to Leica users. Someone spending $2500 to try and achieve the last bit of image perfection might be interested in the results of these tests.

That being said, I would hope that Erwin has spent the time to read much of the available literature. This would help him narrow his focus and provide his results in an easy to understand format.

That being said, I remember the interesting digital images provided by Sean Reid taken with both old and new lenses.

Sometimes seeing real pictures is better than looking at test images.

Nikon and Leica have both have engaged in namedropping and endorsements from celeb pros with the same marketing strategy behind it. Sure it's herd mentality for amatures to buy into a brand just because some pro talks it up, whether it's one wellknown with books articles and 1,000's of published images to his name or one unknown outside of a small following on internet forums. Do everybody else around here think that pros who don't use Leicas for there living are mindless sheep? Or for that matter that EVERY amature who uses a Canon is?
