ken_wang1
I had some pictures from NIKON X40. for example, original size of the pic is 2,159 KB, after I use the " lighting" to light up some "darken" pictures or "Crop" and resaved it under a diff name, the file size is only 259KB. Is this right? How can it shrink so much in size? Also, in one of my folders, under View - "thumbnails", all the file name descriptions are not there - such as "DSC001,dsc002,dsc004,etc.". But they appear when I change to other View - Details, Icons etc. How can I make the descriptions reappear under the "thumbnails"?
Dieter Schaefer
Check the "Choose details" under the "View" menu" of your folder. As to file size, when you crop, file size will go down. Besides that, the main parameter determining the size of the file is the quality of the JPEG you are saving from your post-processing software. High quality (10-12) will result in a larger file than using some low quality setting like 3, which results in a highly compressed file with a small size. neil_parker
You should NEVER resave a file as a jpeg, (unless it's for a web page), every time you resave a jpeg, you give it an additional compression cycle and you destoy and forever lose more detail, all files should be saved as a tiff or some other uncompressed format. The only way to get files that small from an image that big is to highly compress it into a jpeg, losing much detail in the process.
ken_wang1
If I don't save it as JPEG file, what format should I save it as? The other part on Description: the name of the file "DSC_001" just does not appear below the thumbnail. While my other folders have such descriptions. hermanjr
You can re save a jpg but use the highest setting in quality. And if you want to see the name if the files under every picture go to View>Thumbnails. Or if you want them in order from low to high number right click>arrange icons by>name. ken_wang1
Somehow, I still don't understand how to set the quality thing. I'm relatively new on this. On the Thumbnails, no matter how I try, I couldn't get the names underneath the thumbnails. They just disappear. I know all about View>Thumbnails etc. It just there is no names underneath the thumbnails. Frustarting.
neil_parker
You should save as a TIFF or other non-compressed format such as photoshop format (.psd). While saving it as a high quality jpeg is better than nothing, I still recommend TIFF. But you don't say what editing software you are using, perhaps it lacks these capabilities. ken_wang1
I do not have Photoshop. I only have some freewares - Picasa, Photoed,Fastone. Will any of these work with TIFF . ( I don't even know what this TIFF means).
paul_ledak
About your problem missing file names on your thumbnails... here is how to fix it. Step 1 - Select another view of your files (like details or icons). Step 2 - After you are looking at your files in this new view... go back to view thumbnails but this time when you select it... make sure you are holding down the shift key when you click on view thumbnails... This should entirely fix your problem.
