davek57
There appears to be a small bit of dust or dirt in the viewfinder of my Nikon D40. It's not on the sensor, and doesn't appear in any photos. Is there a simple, practical way to clean this, or simply live with it? The camera operates perfectly. Thanks.
alan_olander1664878205
If you can see in the viewfinder, it's on the focusing screen, most likely. If it's on the bottom of the screen, you may be able to blow or brush it away gently. They cause no harm, but they can be annoying.
michaelging
It probably not in the viewfinder ,but under it. Take the lens off,and look on the mirror and above the mirror and see if you can see the spot and blow it off. Do not try and clean the mirror by touching it in anyway. If you try doing this when you have the camera set to sensor cleaning the mirror will be up and you will not be able to see the offening dust. hermanjr
use q tips to clean the viewfinder first, and if that doesn't work buy a blow brush. Remove the lens, and brush gently while blowing at the same time to remove any dust on the reflex mirror. But it doesnt do any harm in the pictures since it is not on the sensor. lindseywasson
As others have said, it's not very likely the dirt is IN the viewfinder-what you're seeing is probably dirt on the mirror behind the lens. Use a blower to clean it, but don't actually touch it, as Michael suggested. I've heard they scratch quite easily. If you're looking for a good blower brush, I'd recommend the Giotto's Rocket Air Blower, it works fantastically. All this being said, the specks of dirt you see don't actually appear on the final image, unless there happens to be dirt on the actual sensor. If there are specks showing up in your pictures, I'd take it in somewhere to get it professionally done, unless you feel confident enough to buy the equipment needed and do it yourself. joey_buchan
I realize this is an old thread, but I just noticed a speck of dust tonight (that's viewable in the vewfinder, but not on the images). I found this by Googling it & I removed the lens & sure enough I saw a little speck of dust or dander on the mirror. I gently blew on it & it went away & everything works great now. Thanks for the info!
