speedlight as slave on Nikon D70

Recommended Posts

I recently bought some studio strobes and would like the option of triggering them with my built-in

speedlite at its lowest setting so it won't act as the primary light, only a trigger for the other 2 lights. My

problem is that I can't find on my D70 how to adjust the speedlite to 1/16 power or 1/25 power. I even

have the manual and can't figure it out.

Can anyone give me some step by step directions?

The first thing you should check is that the strobes will actually fire with the built-in flash due to any pre-flash that the camera may put out for TTL exposure.

If I recall correctly, (I rarely use that flash for anything but catch lights,) it was easy. Or it won't do it. Either way, the answer was simple and I never tried it again. Someone else will give you that answer, I'm sure.

I regularly use the pop up flash, at 1/32 power, on a D80 to fire my studio lights - on the D80 it comes under Custom Setting no 22, I think it was similar on the D70. Your problem could be that you are not showing the FULL custom menu, I seem to recall that it defaulted to a shortened version - if so display the full menu then you should find it.

There should be an option to change the flash mode you need to change the flash mode from TTL to Manual, once you do that you see options to change the output power. It's on page 150 of the Nikon D70 manual.

Custom setting 19: Flash Mode

You can also get the SG-31R flash blocker if 1/16 is not short enough duration for you.
