Does D70s support Sandisk Extreme III?

I recently purchased two sandrisk extreme II CF cards from adorama. I used

one, took about 200 shots and then got message "CHA" and "this card cannot be

used." This happend before on an old card that I won't used for anything

special, and with than one, i lost one photo, but the rest were okay and never

had a problem recovering them later. This time, i have not been able to

recover anything. I hooked the camera to my pc, used my external card reader,

and used the recovery disk that came with the card from sandisk...still

nothing. I am extremely furstrated. According to sandisk's website, this is a

problem with my camera, not the card, however, during the recovery process, i

am getting a message indicating the card is damages. Anyone have any

experience with this? Does the D70s support this card? Any adivce??

Did you format the card in the camera before using it?

I've used SanDisk Extreme 3 CFs in my d70. No problem.

Your subject title mentions the Extreme III but your post mentions the Extreme II... which one is giving you the problems?

 

I have 2 Sandisk Extreme III CF cards that I use with my D70s and D2H and I've never had a problem with them. Many times I pull the card out of the D70s, put it directly into the D2H and switch back again without formating and still everything comes out fine. I guess I don't know what to tell you. One thing to remember, it is good practice to immediately format a new card in the camera right after purchase before shooting any pictures with it.

Sorry, Extreme III...typing fast, didn't proof read. And yes, I formatted it right out of the box, with the D70s, took over 200 shots, then got the error message. I just spoke to sandisk, they are saying nothing can be done since rescue pro didn't work and my card readers can't read it. I'm just very very frudtrated, all the older posts I've read about corupt cards indicate the users had problems right from the beginning, not after shooting a couple hundred images.

What size card are you using? This is most likely what caused the problem. Ive used a 2gb extreme III card in my D70 for over a year with no problem. Nikons website does not show any Sandisk approved extreme III cards above 2gb. I would assume your issue is with a 4gb or 6gb card, yes?

What is the capacity of your Extreme III compact flash card? The 4G version has a tiny dip switch on the edge of the card for FAT16/FAT32 selection. If yours is a 4G, I would move that switch back and forth a couple of times to make sure that it is in the right position.

I also have a 2G and an 8G Extreme III as well as a 4G Extreme IV; none of them has that dip switch. That is only a feature on the 4G Extreme III.

It's a 2G card

I have Extreme III 1GB, 2GB and 4GB cards and use them in my two D70s cameras. No switches to set on these.

All of my Extreme III's, 2, 4, and 8G work on my D100. I am sure normally the D70s would work with all of them as well.

 

If your D70s is otherwise fine, I would test the card on another camera. Most likely your new card has some problems, but this can be a camera defect also.

 

P.S. There are a lot of counterfeit Sandisk cards. I sure hope that yours isn't.

There was an "unsubstantiated" post recently about Adorama selling bogus Sandisk cards. ?

I had problems with a card when I got my first d70. A pin was bent in the body. Perhaps the card you have is having problems connecting.

I lost all the pictures on a Sandisk card that was formatted in a D70s and then used in a D200. Now, I always keep the cards seperated.

 

Shun - There's no switch on the current Sandisk Extreme III 4.0GB cards. The 4GB card now looks just like your picture of the 2GB card.

Wow, that's a shame. I have used a couple of those Extreme II 2GB cards for a while, in both D70s and the D200; no issues. Could just be a lemon, I'm sorry to say.

Erik - I'm refering to the type III cards - I ended up with 100 or so images where the top half of the image was fine and the bottom half were just a series of lines. The images were taken rapidly in the NEF format with a D200. That card worked fine before and after this problem.

 

I never followed up with testing but, attributed that isolated problem to using a CF card formatted in a D70s in a D200.

I have both a D70 and a D200 and use nothing smaller than a 4GB card in either camera. My 4GB Extreme III and Extreme IV cards work flawlessly in both cameras as does my 8GB Extreme III cards. You didn't ask about other brands, but I've never had a problem with Ridata 4GB cards, Seagate 4GB CF drives, or Hitachi 4GB microdrives either. Do you swap cards a lot? I use larger cards to cut down on that. Every time you swap a card is a new chance to bend an interface pin or wear the gold off of it.

You know, I just had the same problem with an extreme III ... worked for months on my

d-200 and just quit. What up with that, eh!. The only saving grace is that it works with my

mac as an storrage device.
