jokerman
Hey everyone. I shoot with a 30D and a 17-85mm USM IS lens. I have a strange black spot in the bottom left third of my pictures after exposure that kindof looks like a short stubby worm. I can't see it through the viewfinder, and I put my lens on my Rebel xt body to compare, but no spot. So, it has to be the 30D body. I thought it might be some kind of scratch, but I looked at the sensor and couldn't see anything. Don't worry, I didn't look too long. Another strange thing is that it changes clarity for different apertures. At large apertures, 4-10ish, it is relatively blurry, but gains sharpness as i go smaller. So I took it to Wolf Camera and the guy said he thought I have some dead pixels, but it looks nothing like some of the dead pixel pics I've seen on the forums. I don't want to have to spend 100 bucks to send it off and have them look at it and be without for two weeks. So, any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! mark u
It is dust or in this case a small fibre on your sensor filter. Try reading any of the recent threads on sesnor cleaning such as this one: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00KwP8
Michael R Freeman
The guy at Wolf Camera has some dead pixels between his ears. You have dirt on your sensor, or more specifically as Mark noted, on the glass filter that covers your sensor. Anything on that filter will cast a shadow on the CCD, and that shadow will become more sharply defined as you stop down to smaller apertures. See Mark's link. No need to send it away and spend $100 - you can clean it yourself.
