jbsox
I am going to Alaska in July for a couple weeks, included in the trip will be shooting grizzlies. I have been told to take some 400 film, I have not used 400 for any nature shots because of the grain. Is this films grain any better then what I have seen for years in 400's.Thanks for any ideas on thisJim B
mark_houlder2
Provia 400X - which is becoming available around the world about now - is reputed to have grain equivalent to Provia 100F. Haven't tried it yet myself (due to receive some soon, though) but might be worth a try.
randall_pukalo
Provia 400F has very fine grain. You wont notice nor be bothered by it. In fact, I would suggest it as an all around film, but it is quite expensive at around 8/roll online. It is nothing like Kodak's old outdated 400 slide film. Provia 400X is also available now from adorama.com at around 11-12/roll. Has even finer grain, should be great stuff. Shutterbug did a review of 400F a few years ago, it is available online at their website.
wirehead
Provia 400X does not have the grain of Provia 100F. It has the grain of Ektachrome 100 Plus. It also goes blue in the shadows. I think I still prefer Porta 400VC or UltraColor 400 for situations where there's not enough light for 100.
albert lui
Compared to a premium color print film, say HD400, the print film has tighter grain. The 400F has the color saturation edge. Both make excellent digital 8x12 prints, provided high end (drum) scanning is used. My standard practice is to shoot ISO 400 print film at ISO 250, so the slide is the faster film in application, for me.
