Wide Angle Lens

I decided that I should definitely go with a wide angle prime or zoom for my first lens with the 30D. I plan

on taking a cruise and would like to get as much of the inside of the ship as possible. I will also be

shooting in low light. I was hoping I could get recommendations for a good low light wide angle prime or

zoom that won't break the bank.

Thanks for the help.

Tokina 12-24 f/4. Love it on my 20D. Very well built, constant f4, good visual/sensory match to 20D/30D. You don't need a "fast" wide angle as you'd be shooting at least f5.6 or f8 anyway.

The Tokina will also mount on full frame cameras (e.g. 5D) as a 19-24 zoom.

The Canon 16-35 will meet all your criteria, except the last one. The 10-22 is a fine lens (I have one), but it's not that fast, and you may find it's just too wide.

I agree and that would be my zoom choice: but the 24mmF1.4L meets all criteria (except perhaps the last), and it is less expensive, and two stops faster, and as such would be my one lens choice.

How wide, how expensive, and will you be shooting anything else besides ship interiors? For instance, the Canon 10-22 is a very good lens optically, might be affordable for some but break the bank for others, and while it's great for cramped interiors, most people wouldn't consider it an all-round lens (you say you want to buy your first lens, which implies it might be the only one you take on this trip).

Both the Canon 10-22 and Tokina 12-24 are excellent lenses. I've used both an ended up buying the Tokina. Better bang for the buck IMHO; it's about $150-200 cheaper, optics are very close, and I prefer the build of the Tokina. I know some think that last 2mm is absolutely critical, but I honestly don't miss it; typically the Canon owners insist the 2mm is huge, while the Tokina owners insist it makes no difference. Pick which side of the fence you fall on. ;)

Jerry Tabachuk Wrote: but do you think 24mm is wide on 1.6 crop body, that (equates to) 38mm (on 1.6 crop)

Response: Yes I agree, your point is well made. The 24 is `wide` (for a definition) but not `very wide`.

The point of my comment was, considering all the criteria of the original question, IMO (in the Canon Range) the only prime lens suitable is the 24mmF1.4L, and that would be my choice in this situation.

The 20mm does provide more width: and the extra 4mm at the wide end is advantageous; but the loss of speed I could not tolerate. The 14mm is too specialized and the 15mm fish eye even more so.

Given the question asked for zoom or PRIME options and had a cost imperative, I was pointing out that the only prime to consider was the 24mmF1.4, AND I would get that and sacrifice the (lack of) width (in the zoom) for the speed.

My bias comes from using lenses at about F2.2 and faster, in low available light indoors, and the logic that one can often move the viewpoint (i.e. one`s feet) but if there is little light . . . well wide open is wide open; and I would prefer to have a couple of extra stops.

I have been absent for a couple of days but I hope this explains my comment better, and the thread is still being read.

I have a Canon 17-40L with my 5D but Chris is right that extra 2mm is everything. I had a 300d with a 10-22mm and I really miss that 1mm (in effect 16-35mm). I am even contemplating a 14mm prime or 12-24mm.

I always find myself wanting to go wider on landscapes. My wife says size doesn't matter but I don't believe her.

PS Anyone know what's the Sigma 14mm like?
