5D LCD

Quick question for my fellow EOS users, I shoot with a 5d, I'm not very rough

on my camera's at all, however you never know what might happen. My question

is, do you guys use any kind of protective cover over your LCD to prevent

scratches, etc? I have heard if they get scratched or worse cracked they are

extremely expensive to repair/replace. So I would like to know if most of you

guys use some kind of guard, and if so, what kind do you reccomend?

I don't use a cover on my 5D LCD but a lot of people in my camera club use covers. The

people who use protective covers over LCD's claim them to be absolutely necessary. People

who do not use LCD covers on their cameras do not report anyproblem of scratches. Sandy

You could purchase on of these LCD covers.

If you ever needed to replace the original LCD cover it is inexpensive, $10-15 for the part and less than 5 minutes of time to do it yourself.

It is held in place with double-sided tape and is easy to pry off.

The 5D already has a protective cover on the LCD--it's the flush-mounted bit of plastic right on top of the LCD screen. If the cover gets significantly scratched up, it's a cheap and easy part to replace.

After over a year of steady use (and about 40,000 exposures), mostly for travel and street photography, the LCD cover on my 5D is still in excellent shape.

Besides my nose and cheek rubbing it? I haven't had any problems with the cover on mine but

it's sits protected in the camera bag and only either rubs my shirt or face, so that's not a

problem. I've looked at the covers and they seem bulky to me, and once I set the parameters

after a few test shots, I rarely look at the LCD, and then only to switch standard color picture

style to monochrome or back.

Some years ago I replaced the stock LCD cover/window on my 10D (badly scratched from my

buttons and belt buckle). It was about $10 and came with double stick tape. The problem it's

to shiny and shows nose grease really well. If you get a screen protector with mat/anti-glare

finish it will not show nose and finger gease nearly as much. I put a Belkin PDA cover on my

5D (cut to fit) and it's much easier to see despite my oily face.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

From a resale value point of view, a small scratch on a 5D LCD doesn't make it significantly inferior compared with a normal one. Covering the LCD/top display with a transparent cover serves only for aestheic reason for the original owner.

In any case my camera's LCD is hard enough such that it doesn't break in my normal uses. I don't think a "strong LCD guard" is necessary but you may want to consider a small piece of transparent cover sheet to keep LCD from minor scratches.

Yeah, Tommy Lee makes a good point. And he thinks the depreciation on digital cameras is bad - my car has dropped in value $15,000 since I bought it a few years ago!

The lesson? We shouldn't drive our cars anywhere, or take our cameras out of the box and take pictures with them, lest we lower the resale value.

Right, thanks for the input, my concern was small scratches etc, I was under the impression that even small scratches would make it neccasary to replace the entire screen which I was told would be 500 to 1000 job by a local camera company. Apparently you can just replaced the scratched plastic cover for 15 to 20, thats reasonable to me if it ever becomes scratched. I'll leave it uncovered and if it becomes scratched up over the years, I'll replace the cover, no biggie.. thanks for all the input. I think the guy is just taking advantage of my lack of knowledge to make a big sale,
