{W/NW}: Pix Ahoy!

Very nice, Nels. It's refreshing to see such a deft demonstration of how composition, subject

and perspective matter far more than how many megapixels someone's got or how pretty

their a-la-carte M is.

I don't have any experience with this digital p/s. Were these in full auto mode or did you use

more manual aperture and focus settings?

Andrew,

I haven't yet opened the manual accompanying the camera, but I seriously doubt there's any manual setting on this. I couldn't even find settings for sharpness, contrast, and saturation. Besides, it only shoots JPG - no RAW. This is, IMO, one of the things that camera manufacturers should come to grips with and realize that among people who know a little bit about photography and want some degree of control, there's a need for a sub-compact shirt-pocket camera model for times when they don't want to or couldn't carry/use their regular camera. All such cameras on the market are crippled by design, because the manufacturers think they would only appeal to the snap-shooting consumers.

That said, there are two settings on this camera that I like: the "Normal Picture" mode where the camera can automatically adjust the ISO up to 200, and the "Intelligent ISO" mode where you can set the upper limit for ISO, up to 1250. However limited these settings may be, they do come in handy. The shot of the guy sleeping against the window of the plane was done in Macro mode with 28mm perspective from real up close, another useful mode.

Thanks.

It's certainly no slouch, this camera. I borrowed one for a w/e. Disliked the fact that you have to both switch on and zoom before you can take a picture. Why don't they make it go to 'normal' focal length at start-up? Jpeg format also limiting, as Nels says. This example indoors in cold north light at 1/15 sec with image stabilisation on.
