henry l
Okay, I'm going to a charity auction and so am compelled to do some bidding. I've previewed the main event photos and many are very good but none have leapt out as must haves. So I want to know which of the photogs below are the most famous and most likely to hold or increase in value (I realize this is two questions). Of course I should buy what I like and not worry about the rest, but since I like a lot of it, don't love any of it, and will be spending money for charity in any case, my approach is what it is. If you could point me to the "best" of the bunch I'd appreciate it. Here they are: Dave Anderson.... Amy Bates.... Daniel Beltrá.... Michele Benoy-Westmorland.... Alan Berner.... Walter Bodle.... Tyler Boley.... David Burnett.... Larry Calkins.... Elizabeth Carmel.... Kevin Cruff.... Mel Curtis.... Jill Enfield.... Baldomero Fernandez.... Larry Fink.... Davis Freeman.... Carol Golemboski.... Arthur Grace.... Kristopher Grunert.... Germán Herrera.... Chris Jordan.... Dave Julian.... Dave Kennedy.... Robert Kent.... Allyson Klutenkamper.... Gregg Krogstad.... Doug Landreth.... Spike Mafford.... Lance Mercer.... Rosanne Olson.... Stephen L. Rosen.... Erin Spencer.... Vicki Marie Stolsen.... Rob Tilley.... Alejandro Tomás.... Joshua Trujillo.... Peggy Washburn.... Grace Weston....
wigwam jones
I don't know about 'most famous', but I'd love to have a signed print by David Burnett. Love his work.
mike_earussi1
The only one I've heard of is Jill Enfield, who does some very interesting work. Now if you could just find some Jerry Uelsmann!
ellis_vener_photography
David Burnett. if he's the photo-journalist. but you should bid on work you like, not on names.
wigwam jones
"...you should bid on work you like, not on names." Careful, Ellis. You're chipping away at the foundation of all fine art collecting...
phyrpowr
Betting on someone named Weston sounds safe
ellis_vener_photography
Actually most of the serious collectors I know buy works they like. Of course some people have to be told wha tthey like but that is a different kettle of eels.
bobatkins
I always thought the rule was that you should buy the photograph that best matches your furniture.
machts gut
Larry Fink!
leericks
I'd like to have a beer with Allyson Klutenkamper. Having said that, I think I agree with Ellis. Find a place and find the perfect thing to put there. Or find the perfect thing and then find a place for it. That is much easier than investing. anthony_r
Most famous is kind of funny. Are you in Seattle? I recognize names, some I went to school with - one or two is a former instructor of mine. lance mercer is a rock photog isn't he. Not sure any are 'famous', but tell Alejandro Tomas hello from an old student if you happen to bump into him there. Kind of funny..
henry l
Thanks for the advice ... knew the "buy what you like" comments were coming even though I tried to head them off. I most certainly don't need to be told what I like -- I make my living as a critic in a different artistic medium -- and in general I agree with "buy what you like." I wrote earlier that I LIKE many of the available prints, don't deeply love any of them, and that I want to spend some money nevertheless for CHARITY, to help "at risk" teens get into photography (and not drugs, gangs, pregnant, etc). Is it hypocritical then to say that if I decide to spend significant money I'd like to shoot for enduring value? If so, can we just let me be a hypocrite and you photo saavy people can tell me who you think is the most famous or who has the highest potential of the bunch? Would it help to see the prints? The ones from Getty are going to be out of my price range for sure. http://www.youthinfocus.org/auction_preview2007.html
mike_earussi1
Not much to choose from (looks like mostly rejects or, at best, seconds). The ones I like best are those by Michele Benoy-Westmorland, David Burnett and Kevin Cruff, with the first one being the most interesting, though the Mata Hari one is interesting from an historical perspective. henry l
Well ended up buying the Jill Enfield photo. Not my favorite but my wife wanted it for her office. The Author Grace photo of George Burns walking out on stage through a puff of cigar smoke was actually really cool. It was bid way up though ... All in all a good event. Some of the student work was terrific -- excellent organization worthy of support.
