oleg_tsinkalovsky
Please help with advice related a 70-200/2.8 L (NOT IS) problem. It works fine with 10D only at 2.8. Using the lenses at any other aperture results in an error message. The body works fine with other L lenses. I checked contacts both on the body and the lenses. I've also read what was discussed at the forum, however haven't found anything appropriate to that problem. I feel I need to send the lences to Canon, but as the last chance address this question to the great experience of the forum.Thanks,Oleg.
doug_axford1
I've got both and they work together without any problems. If you don't get an answer here, I'd call Canon before you start thinking about shipping them in.
m_barbu1
Have you tried resetting your camera by removing both batteries?
wolver
Sounds like a communication problem. Try cleaning the contacts on the 70-200.
bdp
How old is the lens? If it's pretty old, it may need to be serviced by Canon.
bobatkins
If it's not a problem with dirty contacts, the lens is faulty. It shouldn't be that way and there are no secret swiches of CF settings that should make it do that.
dave_holland
It makes sense to get as much information as you can about the problem before sending it on. Switch bodies and see if the message is still the same. You'll isolate the problem to either the lens or the body, without confusion. Dave
mars c
How long has it been like that? Clean the contact on the body and the lens, mount the lens, set the camera to aperture prio. and set it to f20. then press the depth of field preview repeatedly and see if the aperture blades closes as you press on. I dont know if this help, but I think its worth a try, cause I've read some lens' aperture blades just froze or got stuck. But all in all , I think it needs servicing by canon. If the lens is fixed by what I suggested, I think it would only be temporary.
gluteal cleft
I think that Mars is on to something. The only time I've seen that happen was a faulty aperture mechanism. Hopefully things work out well.
mark u
It sounds as though the electromagnetic diaphragm unit that controls the aperture has burned out. Time for Canon service.
chrisjb
Hi, you don`t mention which Error message you get or if the same everytime. I have had 3 Sigma lenses that the aperture unit failed completely, (would not close down) they had to be replaced, But they did not show Error messages as the body assumed the unit got the messages and kept going causing over exp. whether the canon does the same only a tech would know. This sounds like communication (contact) or a sticking diaphram, usually from lack of use. The DOF test is a quick check. hold the DOF button as you change f2.8 > f22 and watch if VF darkens. If other lenses are ok on the body that points to that lense. If not a contack most likely a service. good luck
oleg_tsinkalovsky
Many thanks to all for good advices! Perhaps I should add some info about the lens. The lens is 7-8 years old, I used it for several years with the same body without any problem. The error message was "Err 99". I checked what have been suggested: contacts, resetting camera, DOF test (a good and simple idea!). Although all this didn't solve the problem, I think it brought new evidences pointing on a faulty aperture mechanism as was suggested by some of you. Will contact Canon after the Easter holidays that are quite long here in Norway :). Again, thanks to all for the help. Oleg.
mark_ryan2
Did the aperture change when you used the DOF button and a small aperture?
oleg_tsinkalovsky
No, Mark, it didn't. Seems there's no hope :(. Oleg
tony_san2
I had the same combination (10D, 70-200/2.8L non IS), and used to see the Err99, but then it went away. Every time, I had that issue, I removed the lense, and put it back, so maybe it was dirty contacts (which got cleaned up). Also have an EOS 3, and that never had an issue with this lense, so it may have been the contacts on the 10D body. I also remember doing some firmware updates to the 10D which may have helped. Good luck with the lense.
