Tamron 1.4x SP AF Pro Teleconverter

How would you rate this teleconverter? I am planning to use it with my 85mm

F/1.8 AF-D. It's stated that the teleconverter is designed to work with lenses

90mm or longer. Will I have issue if I use it with 85mm lens?

It may be a problem. I once tried to use a 2x specifically meant for a 200mm lens or longer on an 85mm lens and could not achieve clear focus at any setting. It worked fine on my telephotos that it was designed for.

What's the element like on the back of the 85mm? That would be my concern. I used their 2x AF for a couple of years and it was worth the money. Physical interference may be your issue. Good luck.

I just got the Kenko pro 1.4X which is the exact lens as the Tamron. Works fine with the 85 f1.8. Images taken with the lens set at f2.8 (actual F4.0) are surprisingly sharp, with good color. AF is still fairly fast. I am impressed with the Tamron/Kenko Pro 1.4X . It works great on my 80 200 2.8 lens, making it an effective 168mm to 420mm f4.0 zoom, which is perfect for outside sports and nature stuff. It is quite useable wide open which surprised the heck out of me.<div></div>

I should have clarified, making it an effective 168 to 420mm lens on my D200.
