nickmeertens
It seems the guys at PN are experimenting with all kinds of advertisement this last week. Earlier there were the big Amazon ads in the comments section, now there is a full width GorillaNationMedia add accross the top of every page of PN. Even worse, it is a Flash one and it's constantly shape shifting. My payed subscription ends on March 11 and I'm not renewing. I don't care for ads on my 'personal' pages on PN and I'm not confident that PN is set on keeping them off there. Mind you, I don't mind advertising on the general pages of PN. There are other picture hosting sites (smugmug, zenfolio) that do guarantee ad- free portfolio pages and I will choose one of those. I must say I do feel saddened about this. I liked the community feel of PN. Guess I'll hang around as a non-paying member to share some pictures with other people who's work I appreciate and admire. garry edwards
Nick, This week, PN has just introduced a new look which, inevitably, has brought a few glitches with it - most of which were put right incredibly quickly. This isn't the new software, which is coming on line soon and which is bound to bring a few of its own IMO. My own understanding of the policy (and I don't know any more than I've read) is that PN wants to show less ads to subscribing members than to others and to show the minimum possible number of ads generally, consistent with the need to generate enough revenue to maintain the site. I must say that I do feel saddened that you don't feel able to support the site financially while things get back on an even keel.
nickmeertens
Garry, What I would like to know is, if it is and will remain the policy of PN to have no ads in personal pages of paying members. Not only for the paying member that is logged in, but also for visitors that are not members but want to look at a portfolio of a paying member...? If that is the case I can live with a few days of experimenting with a new look and new ads in a life environment. At this moment I am not convinced that it is the case and am therefore holding of renewing my subscription. I would like an answer from the person responsable for the policies at PN. Regards, Nick
ghiga
Hallo, I'm not contrary to the existence of ADS in the photonet's pages. But the problem is: they are too disturbing in this form! I hate the moving images in the page. That "GNM" at the top of the page in continuous movement is really unbearable. Every page I go to open it is there! My eyes are not happy of this. The "EVENTUAL" presence of an ADS have to be DISCREET and NOT DISTURBING. My reaction is to close the page immediately and to not stop on the photos. If You can't change the kind of the ADS, and can't remove it, please, PUT IT TO THE END OF THE PAGE! Note that if I'm disturbed by the ADS, NEVER I WILL GO TO SEE HIS SITE! And this is not good for the advertiser! Thanks.
joshroot
And here is the usual "sticky thread from Josh that attempts to explain the situation": http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00K9nw&tag=
philg
Nick: Thanks for using photo.net and we are grateful for your contributions to the community. We tried Google and Gorilla ads in the gallery section of our site and they didn't work. Before giving up altogether, I thought I owed it to our shareholders and creditors to give the Amazon banner a two-day trial. That didn't work, so now we can say the personal pages in the gallery will not have anything other than photo.net content. The site is 14 years old, so I would hesitate to say "never" to anything. nickmeertens
Phil, thank you for responding. Your comment was valid for 2 days, but now the ads are back, flashing all over my personal pages. That and your hesitation to confirm a policy where personal pages have no ads does it for me really. No renewal of a payed subscription here, sorry.
