Ker Rockwell reviews

I think most people that buys cameras tend to take family snapshots. For these people his camera and lens reviews have a bent toward value rather than absolute image quality. His site is not aimed for the pros or budding pros. It's because of these reasons that Ken's website has found a niche and he is able to make some money off of it.

Ken's controversial for good reason, but there's no way I'm picking on him for a page of shots of his new baby. Your average new parent hasn't had enough sleep to remember which side of the camera to aim at the subject and Ken's shots are pretty cute new baby shots. Ken might open himself up for plenty of criticism (witness the linked "Color Management is for Wimps" article), but I'm leaving this one alone.

While those aren't the greatest shots, I don't think they're meant to be portfolio level work. They are candid shots in uncontrolled environments of personal, family moments.

Now if you really want to be objective and fair, you should grade him on the pics in his gallery. But it doesn't actually sound like you want to be fair...more like you just want to knock someone down.

They're just snapshots of his baby. I don't think he was gunning for Annie Liebowitz's gig with those - just another proud dad with a camera is all. Some of Ken's work is pretty good even though I don't agree with all of his advice. He sure looks like a happy guy!

I'm on Ken's side. I'm a recent father myself and take loads of pictures of my daughter. I like his site. He is very pragmatic and keeps his photography simple. As I get older I have less and less time to devote to the nuts and bolts of photography. I want to take pictures and then look at them with a minimum of messing about.

All the best

Alan
