Youth baseball league photo help, Please

My wife has been shooting action shots with her d70 for the last couple

season's with great success with a 80-200 f2.8 lens. This year she is taking a

larger role within the league and will be taking photo's for the league. These

shots will be taken outside on the field and will be individual player shots

and a team photo. My question is what lens would be best for these type shots?

Since these will be taken outside we want to get the best lens for both inside

and outside work. Could anyone point us in the right direction? We have been

thinking along the lines of a 20-35mm 2.8?

35mm ,the standard lens for that sensor size for doing posed team photos.

 

Any indoor work requires a fast lens or flash and that is more important than a long range zoom.

 

People took really nice photos long before zooms were ever invented.

 

The important thing is to be at the right place at the right time and be ready to take the photo.

I am shooting league pics right now. I use a 24-70 2.8 lens. Don't really need the 2.8 if outdoors because you really want an f-stop of around 7. That is for individuals. I use my big lens 70-200 for teams as I get better DOF.

Thanks for the responses, Melinda I don't believe she needs the 2.8 for the outdoor shots but never know when you'll need it inside, right? Maybe we'll use the 80-200 for the team shots as well just mount it on a tri-pod and see how it works out. Melinda are you using a flash for filling outdoors?

Yes, I use an SB800 mounted on a flash bracket. I also use a reflector to help reduce shadows due to baseball caps.

Outside you don't need a 2.8 but it doesn't hurt to have a good build which generally means 2.8 or better, I use a 50 1.4 (not at 1.4) for teams and 70-200 for individual portraits and a 120-300 2.8 for actions, inside go with mono's don't stuff around.

 

I'm assuming you are being paid for this being a larger role.
