synnacdesign
Got a question (hehe like that is a surprise): Anyone have any experience with Micro Center's branded Compact Flash cards? They have a great sale on them at the moment but I am hesitant cause I never have used them. Thought I would ask here first.
synnacdesign
After remark. The cards are made by IPSG.
sloopjohne
I saw them in 1GB (no 2's or 4's) at my local Micro Center store and, man, were they dirt cheap --less than $15. However, I searched in vain on the disk label for a speed designation, and none of the sales staff knew what it was. My bet is that they'd be too slow for good Canon DSLR's. But even if they aren't I'd also bet that they'll go belly-up in no time flat. Caveat emptor! I think I'll stick with my tried-and-true SanDisk Ultras. :-)
Former P.N Member
I'm using a 4GB version in my Canon 1D MkII without any problems for about 4 months now. I haven't tested transfer speeds but I don't shoot a lot of long bursts so that's not a major issue for me. Dick
sloopjohne
"I'm using a 4GB version in my Canon 1D MkII...." They make a 4GB version? Cool! :-) How much was it? I'm glad it's holding up for you. Maybe I'll look into getting one myself.
Spearhead
<i>My bet is that they'd be too slow for good Canon DSLR's. </i><p> There is no such thing.<p> Unless you're filling the buffer, which typically happens primarily with professional sports shooters and photojournalists, card speed doesn't matter. I shoot professional sports with a 1DMkII with standard speed cards and don't run into a problem. synnacdesign
I know they make 120 speed 2gb versions of it for $27 at microcenter
Former P.N Member
<I>"They make a 4GB version? I don't see any MicroCenter branded cards on their website right now but I know I've seen them in the store at times other than when I bought mine. <p> Dick
frank_kimble
Very timely thread.I just got this in my email today: 1GB Compact Flash Card $13.99 Bulk packaging / 838474 2GB Compact Flash Card $19.99 I added one of these in 1gb right after Christmas to my 2gb SanDisk Ultra. So far so good. Also the 2gb is now cheaper than when I bought the 1gb.

gaetano catelli
<i>"The cards are made by IPSG."</i> <p> i have a feeling that IPSG doesn't "make" anything. it looks like a "captive" arm of Micro Center's that puts their label on manufacturer closeouts. <p> see: <a href="The cards are made by IPSG">http://www.ipsgproducts.com/info/company.html</a> <p>

sloopjohne
Gaetano-- The IPSG site says nothing at all about CF cards, and lists only SD cards in their list of products under "USB Card Readers/Media." Nor does the search engine turn up anything about CF cards other than that their USB readers will read them. So I suppose that means we still don't know who makes Micro Center's CF cards for them. gaetano catelli
it says here that the "bargain" in question was made by IPSG: <a href="http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=250133">http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=250133</a>
critofur
I should be getting my Rebel XT within a week. I picked up a Micro Center 2GB CF card for $19, the clerk said it's 120X. I have no reason to believe it won't last long or be reliable. This has become a (really) mass produced product and I bet they have the production methods pretty much refined by now to produce them: fast, reliable, cheap, and in HUGE quantities. Anyway, if I do have any issues I shall promptly post a message about it here! I assume that SD/CF etc. all use the same actual memory chips, and I would also guess that not that many different companies make the flash memory, so the chips in the MC modules could be the same manufacturer as "premium" brands.
