5D Raw photos softer when converted with DPP?

When i work my 5D Raw files in Digital Photo Prof.(DPP) They are very sharp.

When converting them to JPG in the highest quality there getting softer, even

when I put sharpness on the highest level. The sharpness control doesn't really

make a diffirence(it does when your working with it, before I convert). I also

tried it when the noise reduction was of.

Can someone help?

Thanx

How do they look when you sharpen them up in Photoshop or some other program? To me it sounds like you are sharpening in DPP rather than in Photoshop. I find that after most raw conversions there needs to be a little sharpening done. You may also want to try converting your RAW files to TIFF rather than JPEG.

Roel, I don't use DPP, so this is a stab in the dark. I import my RAW files with PS CS2. There is a sharpen feature in the import utility that says it works for the preview only. My thought is, maybe DPP is giving you a sharpened preview but when you convert it hasn't really done the sharpening?

It's better to sharpen post-conversion according to target print size. Otherwise you end up

sharpening multiple times one on top of another. Why? You need different amounts of

sharpening for web, small prints and large prints.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

What Puppy said. Photoshop CS defaults to some arbitrary sharpened value (25? 25 what?) which I always slide back to zero then sharpen based on the output. An image destined for the web needs a very light touch in the sharpening department as opposed to a large print which needs quite a bit more. That's another reason I avoid Photoshop's "Bicubic Sharper" interpolation; there's no "one size fits all" approach to sharpening, I'm afraid. Good luck!

Phil B, Sorry it is my bad. I swear I had the same problem and was getting around it by transferring as I explained before or with batch process. I upgraded to the latest DPP version very recently, tried now and it is working just fine. I don't know if it was a problem with the early version, cannot verify now. Maybe I was just plain confused. Sorry again!
