j_sevigny
Is there a standard format for sending e-mail portfolios to art galleries? I assume I don't want to send a bunch of compressed attached jpegs. Also, is there a (Mac) program that's good for creating such a thing?
godfrey
I wouldn't send a portfolio through email. Perhaps a URL address that points to a portfolio built as a high-quality PDF document with Adobe Acrobat or Photoshop. Godfrey
Matt Laur
I agree with Godfrey. It just seems like bad manners to send huge file attachments via e-mail. Sending around a link to where the images can be found (no matter how obscure the URL) not only allows the recipient to go look when they're good and ready, but may also get your mail delivered where it might otherwise be blocked. A lot of people don't seem to realize that many mail servers place a limit on the size of the attachments that they will permit on incoming (and sometimes outgoing) mail. A decent portfolio could easily exceed 10MB, but it's a rare mail server that will tolerate an incoming message of that size. And don't forget, it your recipient wants to forward your work along to someone else, they in turn would have to upload your large attachment as they send mail, and the next recipient would have to download it, again. It gets even worse when you send it to several recipients, all on the same domain (say, the jury for a particular gallery). Much, much better to pass along a URL to your web site, where you'll have a much more appreciative audience (and don't think that good manners don't play a role in the jurying process!). Good luck! w.smith
Zip your full-size photos together (not to make 'm smaller, zipping doesn't work on JPGs, but to 'tie' them together in one archive/folder; max. 100MB per archive/folder), then upload via http://www.yousendit.com/. Your recipient will receive a small mail message with a link, and they can proceed to download your photo archive/folder at their convenience. Test it out by sending a zipped archive/folder like that to your own eMail address! If desired you can password protect zipped archives/folders. Check your zipping app's preferences. john_elder1
If you want to be on good terms with any Gallery, you will not e-mail that gallery ANY material that is unsolicited. Contact the Gallery and ask for their submission guidelines. If you just e-mail pics to the gallery, you will have lost before you got started
