leo_maniace2
I am interested in the Zeiss Ikon 15mm f2.8 ZM distagon lens. It is available in the leica M mount. Does anyone know of an adapter, either commercially available or custonm made that would allow the use of this lens on Canon EOS cameras(1VHS and 1DSII).Thanks, leo
steven_moseley1
Hi, Leo, why would you want to spend over 4000 USD on a rangefinder lens for an SLR when you could buy a Contax C/Y Zeiss 15mm for under half that..and it is an SLR lens that will work with an EOS-Contax adaptor.. cheers Steve. rainer_t
Leo, to my knowledge, the register distance of Leica M is 27.8 mm, and Canons EOS has 44mm ... this means, and adapted lens cannot focus on infinity, or the adapter requires an additional optical element (that changes focal length and reduces optical quality). leo_maniace2
Is the Contax C/Y 15mm Zeiss lens as highly rated as the zeiss ZM?
bill_marshall1
Different design. The C/Y 15/2.8 is a fisheye.
steven_moseley1
Hiya, There are no comparisons..it is not really possible, which is really what is at the heart of this matter..a rangefinder lens is not useable on an SLR in this instance anyway, so the comparison, were it possible, would be pointless..this whole adaptor 'thing' has gotten out of hand IMO..lots of users seem to think they can use any old lens on any camera body with no problems, but it just aint so.. cheers Steve. steven_moseley1
Hiya, Bill..the 15/3.5 (note 3.5 not 2.8) Zeiss is not a fisheye. The Zeiss 16/2.8 is the fisheye in the Contax lens range. The 15/3.5 is a normal ultra-wide. cheers Steve.
vivek iyer
I believe Canon makes ultrawides for EOS mounts.
steven_moseley1
..Vivek...well spotted...It always confuses me why so many EOS users miss this easy option..mind you I guess some will ask which adaptor to use with them..
leo_maniace2
The Canon 14mm L lens was not very sharp. Canon does not excell at ultrawides.
cdnguyen
Leo - I would get the leica R lens 15mm f2.8 so you mount it on the Canon. the leica lens is designed by Zeiss anyway.
leo_maniace2
The zeiss lens is $3800 vs the Leica @ $7000. Even adding the cost of an M6 @ $1000 the zeiss is a big savings.
x-ray
I owned the 15 zeiss for my Rollei 3003 system back in the 80's. As mentioned the 16 is a fisheye and I owned one of those also. Both are excellent lenses. If you can find a 15 in Rollei mount you can get an adapter for the EOS. It's very true the 14 canon is not a very good lens. I've used it a few times and it is very poor even on film.
roger krueger
Charles--no, the Leica 15/2.8 Elmarit was designed by Schneider, Its predecessor the 15/ 3.5 Super Elmar was designed by Zeiss.

Leo--an M lens would need to be completely re-engineered to work on an SLR. It is possible--look what CV did with their 12 and 15 for Nikon mount--but you're still left with a lens that needs the mirror up. No DSLR has real persistent mirror-up, only pre-fire.

The guy at 16-9 has had success putting a Voigtlander 15 on a 5d--he mountedthe lens with the mirror up, and then just let the mirror bang against the (padded) lens barrel each shot. But this doesn't work with a 1dsII, the camera locks up with an error if the mirror doesn't fully return. Here's the article: Voigt 15 on 5d

But, again, the Voigtlander isn't just an adapter or mount change, they had to re-engineer the entire lens mechanics--but not the optics--to avoid having all the controls end up inside the camera. luis-a-guevara
LEO if you are interested on a Zeiss Distago 15mm f3.5 that you can use on your Canon EOS please check Item number: 250084656672 on eBay or follow this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=015&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=250084656672&rd=1&rd=1 Either way , I am selling a Distagon on Leica-R mount that you can use easily on EOS with a converter that you find plenty on eBay and that I can even supply for free if you win the bid. The Distagon is an amazing ultra wide lens with a viewing angle of 110 degrees that equals what you see with both eyes opened (each eye sees 47 degrees). Its main characteristic is that it is HIGHLY RECTILINEAR , that is it does not distort the images by barreling , a common problem with extreme wide angles. That is what makes them so expensive. The current bid on my lens is $1250 . This lens will focus from 16 cm all the way to infinity. you can check some pictures taken with 15 mm Distagon-M at Luminous Landscape by following this link: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/zeiss-m-mount.shtml Luis
