Zoom lens slippage

I have been very happily using an 18-200 zoom with my D200 - but after a

month, the lens slips when pointing up or down - if I have it at say 50 mm and

point it down, it slips down to maybe 150mm- I have to hold the zoom ring to

keep it still. I would think this a manufacturing flaw - agree or disagree?

That is the "zoom creep" problem for the 18-200 that has been discussed quite a few times. If you search this forum or others you'll find plenty of discussion.

Essentially it is gravity at work.

Whether that is a flaw or not is a matter of opinions. I consider that a feature for that lens.

Yup, they all do it, but they also all stay put at 18mm. It's worth mentioning that the lack of a more expensive and heavy damping system to prevent that is one of the reasons that the lens is lightweight and so fast to use. Not a bad trade-off for how instantly you can manipulate that lens over such a huge range. You just get used to it! It's not meant to be used, really, in place of prime lenses or a monster-heavy beast of a tele-zoom... that lens exists for ad hoc shooting and quick-draw stuff. At which it excels for the weight and size.

I have a 35-105mm F3.5-4.5 push-pull Nikon zoom that I purchased used. I had it tightened up at Chicago Camera in Chicago. My repair guy, Bill put new seals in it as well. I don't remember my previous version of that lens extending while pointed down but I really noticed it on this one and it annoyed me. I like push-pull, ordinarily.
