dinesh.godavarty
Hey Guys, I seem to have a weird problem. I recently set up an L shaped desk and I set the monitor right at the corner so that it faces the diagonal direction (which is the most convenient). However, I see this greenish hue at the top right corner of the monitor. If I turn the monitor to the left so that it is facing in a roughly parallel to the desk alignment, the color goes way. At first I thought it could be from one of the lights in the house; but I see it during the day too. Changing the alignment seems to fix it. However the direction is not very comfortable to work with. Any idea what is going on? Hope I am sufficiently clear with the problem. Thanks. ellis_vener_photography
sounds like that corner is near an electrical device that is creatign a small magnetic field.
Matt Laur
Ellis is most certainly right. Look for desklamps with transformers, speakers, or even steel structural elements. It only takes a small magnetic field in the right place to throw off the electron guns in your monitor. In case you're wondering why this happens, the beams of electrons that are lighting up the phosphorous on the inside of your glass display are aimed across and down the screen by rapidly changing electromagnetic fields generated at the rear of the monitor enclosure. Different magnetic fields will impact that display in different ways, but think of it sort of like a strong wind that's blowing the spray from a garden hose off-center from where you're pointing it, and smearing the pattern. You'll find your magnetic source if you look around. You've also just stumbled into another reason why a lot of people like flat-panel displays (which don't use the same imaging technology). LCD displays also have a much smaller footprint on your desk, which gives you more positition options, ergonomically speaking.
photojoe
The two answers above are great for CRT monitors. If you have this problem with and LCD please keep in mind that LCDs have a limite viewing angle. As you view a LCD from an "off angle" odd things happen to color and contrast. vincent_j_m
CRT monitors can go crasy in other ways too. I had a monitor with a problem I can't figure out to this day. When it faced one direction, the display was ok, when I repositioned my desk and it faced another way, the display was rotated by about 1-2 degrees, small but noticeable. I could repeat this each time. Maybe this monitor has built in compass, very sensitive to the earth's magnetic field?
