Which Film Canon to pair with a 1D MkII N ?

uk

Recommended Posts

I shoot a 1D MkII N which is a delight for the work I do. However, I'd like o add a film body for: FF, film

chacteristics, reliability and backup with lens compatibility.

Which Canon film body is most like the 1D in its ergonomics and controls? I find the dual controls on

the 1D to be of great value and that may be a deciding issue.

Price is hardly an issue here because the used market offers tremendous kit.

Thanks.

Certainly any of the Eos 1 series.

If buying used try to inspect first as some have been truly abused throughout their working life,, good rock solid camera.

If you just want cheap and reliable then there are multitudes of cheap plastic EOS film bodies which are more than adequate, the 3000V for example.

Remarkable 1VHS of course. 10 fps from HS booster.

1VHS is the mother body frame of all Pro "1" digital body. Still 1D, 1Ds still looks like 1VHS.

1V truely marked itself a legend, a "V"ictory.

p.s. EOS 3 is also a great film body, if money is concern.

"and backup with lens compatibility."

Gary, the 1V (which I still use and used along Canon DSLRs) is FF as you say and want. So the lens compatibility won't be exact, since the 1DMKIIN is a 1.3x crop camera. Close, but not the same. If you had the 1DsMKII or 5D that would be different of course. That being said, there's nothing you can do about it if you want film. But the DOF, focals, etc. won't match. If you get the 1V, get the 1V-HS (which has the booster/grip).

Thanks Bogdan,

I might have said 'lens mount compatibility' to be clear. I assume the lens mount are

completely compatible? I presume the battery is the same on the 1v as the 1D ?

I realise the impact of the crop factor on focal length using the 1D.. N. There are times

when I want to shoot a little wider with my 16-35 and the FF will help if there's not a

deterioration due to the wider image format.

As said, the ergonomics are important because the controls fall perfectly to hand for me.

I've noticed a marked increase in % vertical shots since I started to use the 1D with its dual

controls.

The weight is secondary as without the heavy 24-70 zoom the camera is fine. It's virtually

confined to work assignments because of the bulk of the lenses which deter me from

using it on walkabouts.

Gary,

The 1V-HS (code name for 1V + PB-E2 booster) is what you want. The controls are almost identical. The batteries however are not :( The PB-E2 booster uses the NP-E2 NiMH batteries, while the 1Dxxxx bodies use the NP-E3 NiMH batteries! But you CAN use the same charger (the NC-E2) for both battery packs. You can also use 8 AAs in the 1V, but the FPS will be slower.

Also, the 1V lacks a 2.5" LCD on the back ;)

Thanks Bogdan.

I've been offered a D20 in top condition at about the same price as a 1v.

Just checking this with y'all because my current opinion is that a full frame film camera in

addition to a 1.3x crop 1D is a better mix than adding a 1.6x crop DSLR. I can see

substantial benefit of having a full frame DSLR and that might come later when Canon

announces the next round of updates.
