rob_s___san_francisco_bay_
Okay, I'm not really interested in your specific model of lens choice (unless you want to share), but I am interested in hearing what your favorite "focal length" is for engagement sessions (translated to full-frame 35mm terms).
I don't typically like shooting with a long lens, but I find for outdoor engagement shoots, a 70-200mm is really nice because you can give the couple some space and it can help to either compress, crop out, and/ or blur the background all at once. I think I will use it more. I still like something in the 24 to 35mm range for dramatic close ups and some more standard environmental portraiture type stuff though.
picturesque
85mm.
kari douma
I agree... I have been shooting with both lately. I don't always like shooting with a long lens, because sometimes you are too far away trying to yell instructions to the couple. So, I usually start with my 17-55 (I think I use it mostly on the 55 end, except when I am doing some dramatic stuff with the wider angle). Then, I step back and tell them to "laugh, cuddle, kiss, ect" while I shoot with my 80-200. I like the look from my 80-200, but it isn't always practicle. greg jansen
For waist up stuff, 80-200. For full body environmental, about 50mm. I don't like close shots with a wide lens. The distortion is not flattering. Just because it looks "different" doesn't mean it's good. I try to have more variety in their expression, more movement, and less variety on lens lenghth. russ_butner___portland__or
Primes in the 50mm - 90mm range. A zoom in the 28-105 range, will handle anything. Russ
khaisy
I use 24-120, the focal lengath varies depending on the shot mostly between 70-
phoneguy
28-70 f/2.8, but I also use my 70-
jenseay
If I'm outdoors and have plenty of space to back up, I LOVE to lug my 70-200 2.8 around for portraits (senior portraits, engagements, etc.). What a great lens!
er1
The 85mm is perfect.
john_lagomaggiore
I agree with the others. I would also use an 85mm but I would also bring along my 35mm and 50mm. I always use primes and I'm one of the few who still uses film.
manolis1
I always use primes and I'm one of the few who still uses film as well. The lenses I use are the 85mm f/1.8 AF & 50mm f/1.8 AF.
conraderb
in full frame terms, I use a bunch: 50mm, 85mm and 135mm film equivalent. occasionally 28mm for some dramatic shots.
