Which would be a really quiet SLR for street / documentary photography?

I am with Curt the Nikon F6 is quiet for an slr, it even has a quiet mode that lets the winder advance the film more quietly. Also, if you get a half case for the camera it can help muffle the shutter and wind by covering the sides and bottom of the camera. Next, use AFS lenses and you have quieter AF. If however you want to listen to those who have the Mamiya 7 and use that 6x7 rangefinder on the street its almost silent because of its leaf shutter.

If you are able to use digital, take a look at the Sony R1, it is completely silent, sports a 10mp chip, and does 24mm at 2.8 all the way to 120mm (albeit 4.8). The silence and wide lens would cost you a fortune in any other camera, and this is the stealthiest thing out there in terms of sound, not to mention the waist level finder.

I have used a number of different camera systems (Leica, Nikon, etc) but by far my favorite is a Konica Hexar AF. They can be had for about $400-500, have a 35mm F2 which is outstanding, they are LIGHT, great viewfinder, autofocus for waist-level shooting, and almost completely silent. You will be amazed at how quiet they are, even the non "silent mode" model. Quieter than Leica. Small enough to hang on your neck inside your coat without being a nuisance. Stuck with a fixed lens, though. Not a big deal. Best travel/street camera I own.
