Erwin on the M8 - Part 4

Well, if you believe half of what you hear on internet Leica forums I guess you would believe it, especially if you are one who constantly reinforces the negative rumors. Funny how that works isn't it.

BTW, I was up at Calumet photo near Chicago over the holidays and had a chance to play with the M*8 and talk with the workers there. They haven't seen the mass exodus of the camera that the internet rumors have led to believe, however they have heard of concerns from users about it. I was so ready to put a deposit down on a chrome M8 but at the last minute decided that I would buy some more film for the time being and wait till after the holidays. It is a darn nice camera though and I do believe I will eventually have one, just have to keep warming myself up to spending that much on a single camera. I would honestly like to see another manufacturer come out with competition for the M8, more choices in the marketplace is always better for the consumer.

Erwin's latest review just about coincides with what most knowledgeable Leica people have been saying on this forum for some time ie. that the M8 can produce the very finest results but the very best film will just beat it. My interpretation of this is that by choosing which camera you most like using you are unlikely to materially effect the quality of the final image. Take your pick.

By the way, one Dutch webshop sold out all of their Spur Orthopan UR testkits after that article was published! Well, it was quite a small stock anyway and I managed to order their last kit - other went backorder. :) The dealer wrote me that they have just received many Spur Orthopan UR orders and it was quite strange...

I think what Erwin is doing is fine. No need for cynicism even if you disagree with what he says or does.

I am now very keen to try out this Spur film. Well, eventually. Too bad there isn't a colour version!

BTW for those wondering, slide film won't fare any better - in fact I'd be surprised if any slide film 100 ISO or faster will give a better result than Portra (or any good negative film of about that sensitivity).

"There have been many people who returned their M8s and have not re-ordered, many

cancellations of unfilled orders, and new orders have trickled to a near standstill."

Once again, i must ask you where you are getting all these facts. Or is this one of those

internet-chatroom thingy again? if that's the case, never mind. it's alright.

Really? When was the last time Nikon or Canon replaced (REPLACED, not a firmware upgrade) a flagship model in under a year?

And as I've said before, my facts come from reputable dealers with whom I have a long-standing relationship and will not quote them without their consent. If it helps you sleep better at night thinking it's a "chat room thingy", then please do.

"In the next installment I will analyze the performance of the M8 with a range of Leica and

Zeiss lenses. The results will be surprising: up till now no one has noted the facts I will

reveal."

so what facts will he reveal in the next installment? that Zeiss/Conina lens is as good as Leica

lens? Zeiss lens does not require IR filter?

Sir, your posts have been impresssionistic as if you were writing a serial fiction.<p>

Without sources of authority, citations, it's only opinion and without a trackrecord for accuracy, opinion is, well, not worthwhile.
