vic_.
Did anyone see this (and took pics of it)? I missed it by a day. http://arthistory.about.com/od/special_events/ss/skymirror.htm It would have presented unique photographic opportunities. Thanks! skeeter
geez, i was there and had no idea it was there! went to the rock and got some interesting shots, but never saw it. for those that have never been there the top of the rockefeller center is nice and worth the price of admission imo. i liked it more than the empire state building. vic_.
Hi Skeeter, I too prefer the top of the Rockefeller Center. One advantage the Rock has is that you can get good pictures of Central Park, something you cannot do from the Empire State Building. In addition, you get good uptown vistas. The Emp State is very limited in terms of views. If you ever get a chance, visit the lobby of a North facing office on a high floor in 9 West 57th, the views beat anything form the above two buildings. I visited a friend who works at 9 West 57th (above 30th floor), and the views are simply breathtaking. Too bad, I didn't have a camera. I missed this "installation" and I also missed the Christo Orange Curtains thingo. Timing is everything!
steve g
I have the good fortune of working in Rockefeller Center and making frequent visits to coworkers working with people from 9W57. That mirror is definetely pretty interesting, especially late at night. And the view from 9W57 cannot be beat. I'm not sure how anyone gets any work done there. Also worth mentioning is the Rainbow Room which also has great views. It is in the same building as 'top of the rock' (30 Rock, The GE Building). Strangely enough I found the view from the sinks in the Men's room there to be better than that from the dining area.

jtdnyc
Vic, a few years ago I happened to be at a meeting in a north-facing conference room near the top of 9 W 57, with a virtually unobstructed view of Central Park. The meeting began as clouds were gathering; then, a thunderstorm. We all just sat and watched. I have no recollection of what was said or decided at the meeting, but I'll never forget that thunderstorm. Just spectacular.
vic_.
Eugene, Thanks for the pics, and Jonathan, for the memorable story. It's amazing how these experiences get hard-wired in the mind.<p>FYI, Eugene's picture "top o rock.jpg" shows the 9 West 57th building, it's the tall black building with the white border in the lower right of the picture. It was known as the Grace Building many years ago.
jtdnyc
Vic, the Grace building is on West 42nd Street and has a sloped front very similar to that of 9 West 57th. The two have similar appearances and are easily confused, but they are different buildings.
vic_.
Jonathan, Apologies, you are right. And to think I walked past the building on Monday. Senility has set in!
jtdnyc
Now that I think about it, 9 West 57th might have originally been called the Solow building, after its developer.
